Horse Racing Handicapping, Losing Streaks and Life
Have you ever wondered how some gamblers and horse riders react when they lose? I’m in the middle of one, or should I say, hopefully near the end of one, as I write this. Yes, even old dinosaurs like me who have played horses since chariot races still go through the pits.
Let me tell you about me, “the long dark night of life,” so you can find something that will help you with your other problems. I sell horse racing games, but before I put one on the market, I try and play it myself. This is how I am able to guarantee the most frequently asked questions about everything I sell.
This is why I try so many things to find the one perfect thing that works best to help my fellow player. That’s why, on October 5th of 2009 I started working on a toteboard plan that follows the money and hopefully will be profitable in the long run. It is now November 6, 2009 so I have been trying for over a month. I have 160% of my bankroll left, so I’m ahead of schedule at the time of writing this.
However, I was at 230% of my bankroll three days ago! This means I have been losing badly. The worst thing is, I had high hopes for this method of choosing winners by following the money, but now I don’t know if I will lose everything I won. It would have been a waste and this would have been another blind alley, the end, I’ve been down a lot and learned to handicap horse racing.
Should old gray beards like me have trouble shedding lines? Besides, I’ve had them so many times that I don’t count. Of course, I’ve had more than my share of winning opportunities, too. The answer is, no matter how many times you live, losing streaks will always pit you and test you over and over again. Buying horses for profit and working in this business is a constant test and you are only equal to your last bet. Do winning contests help? It certainly helps to remember them as a reminder.
It doesn’t matter when you lose. It starts to control your thoughts, especially when you see money slipping and you don’t know where the bottom is. I think people who play the stock market feel the same way when it starts going down. We hypocrites can’t help but wonder, “Where is the bottom?”
The worst thing you can do is go for what poker players call, “Tilt.” You should live a healthy life and live a healthy life.
First, don’t start loving yourself. Nothing will get you into a hole faster than an internal conversation that is negative or dangerous. Gambling and horse playing are serious, they are part of life and if this is the path you choose then be prepared. So keep quiet and be quiet or start with a positive talk to yourself, “Every day in any way, I am getting better and better and this is the way to enter, no matter how difficult it is, to win.”
It doesn’t matter if you fully believe it, say it. As they say, “It’s a steal until you make it.” As long as you are honest with yourself about your wins and losses and how they affect you and your loved ones.
Speaking of loved ones, that is another important part of living a lost life. Stay connected with people. Tonight I called my grandson and we talked about the saxophone, karate, winter, and other things. It helps to remember that there is a whole world full of things and sharing those things with others is the best way to clear your mind and stay happy. It also means that you are not neglecting those you love and those who love you. It’s bad enough that you’re on a losing streak, don’t put them on one, either.
If you don’t have close relatives or friends, then start a conversation with a stranger and talk about the weather, baseball, the government, anything that will start your brain to work other than the track and losing or winning. Humans are social animals and interacting with other people is like medicine, even if it’s a little difficult to start a conversation, even if all you feel like doing is crawling into a cave and licking your wounds. Look around yourself and see the world.
Tomorrow I am going on a day trip with my Sweetie and taking care of some health related business. This is another thing you should do, take a break and do something other than the railways and gambling. Have a conversation, check out the different features and areas.
Finally, when you’ve drained your brain enough and given yourself a break, come back with the determination to finish. Keep records when you gamble and know your ROI with the bets you made. Look at everything and find out your weaknesses and strengths. Be willing to admit your mistakes and realize that sometimes it’s not you or your way, gambling is easy. If you can look at the long term, the big picture, and see that you are ahead, then you are lucky.
Making a 10% profit over time is pretty good in this business, sorry if I just blew your bubble, but that’s the reality of betting on horses to make a profit. If you can’t make it, then you are one of the many people who are on a journey to success on horseback. Have a good plan, don’t bet with money you can’t afford to lose. Take time off (people in all other professions do) and eat healthy and exercise because we as riders have a tendency to let ourselves go, which affects our ability to think clearly and our ability to win.
Above all, enjoy your days at the races, if you’re not, then maybe it’s time to take a break and evaluate your strategies and goals. Life is short and should be full of fun. Just like we use systems to beat competitions, and systems to get the most out of life, what I just shared with you is a great starting point.
Enjoy your days at the races.
