Once you’ve completed your interview and the thank you notes have been sent, the hardest part of the process begins…the waiting game.
It may take a few weeks before the company gets feedback to you. From your perspective, speed can be frustrating and difficult to understand.
However, it is a simple fact that when a job needs to be filled, the timeline can be complicated due to various operational issues. The company’s radar screen is completely lit up; This position – and you – represent only a “blip”.
Of course you want to know your candidature status as soon as possible. So after a few weeks you might consider calling. But is now the right time? You don’t want to wait too long…you don’t want to be seen as a pest or a desperate person…you just want to know when to pick up the phone.
Remove some of the ambiguity and make it easier on yourself by creating a basis for your follow-up… you’re still at the interview.
At the end of the conversation, you should ask the hiring manager for an approximate schedule. Ask what the next steps will be and how quickly he expects all interviews for the position to be completed.
If he tells you that he expects to complete all interviews in two weeks, you know that you can call to inquire about the position of the job in three weeks (waiting an additional 7 days after the indicated period is advisable).
Of course, you may find that a decision hasn’t been made yet – in which case you should ask the hiring manager when he thinks he’ll know more.
