Dog Training Treat – 3 Steps to Train Your Dog to Shake a Paw Using a Dog Training Treat
Over the years, studies have proven that dogs respond better to positive reinforcement such as rewards. This is because they always try to please their owners. Dog training therapy can be a rewarding experience for both dog and owner when used effectively. You can get your dog to do any trick using treats. But before we train our dog to move the paw, it is important to prepare for the training session.
Preparation for dog training
1. Choose a place where there are no distractions. Your dog needs to focus on training exercises.
2. Carry a bait bag or coat with a large pocket to hold all the training treats. This will be useful during training. If you don’t have a bait bag, a paper or plastic bag will also work.
3. Training treats should be soft, so that your dog does not spend too much time finishing the treat and concentrates on the training.
Train your dog to paw!
1st step
For your dog to paw, he must first be in a sitting position. So put a flat collar on your dog and tell him to “sit”, immediately reward him with a treat when he sits and acknowledge him by saying “good sit”. Always remember to be enthusiastic when training your dog. Your dog should be sitting with his hips square, with his back leg not tucked behind his hip.
Step 2
Now pull the flat collar to the left and watch your dog’s weight shift to the left leg. This will free his right leg. Now take his right leg and shake it saying “move paw” the first couple of times. Reward him with a treat each time and get excited about it.
Step 3
Release the dog and ask him to move the paw. When he lifts his leg, take the leg and say, “Move good paw” and reward him again. Do this exercise twice a day and your dog will understand the command “move paw”.
If your dog does not respond to the command, simply repeat step 2 two or more times. Do not force him to move his paw. Remember the goal is to make training fun for both the dog and yourself. So be patient.
