July 1st found us celebrating our one year wedding anniversary by going to a theater in New York City to see a Broadway musical. Now, you expect great entertainment in the city that never sleeps – and we got it! What I didn’t expect, however, was to walk out of the theater open-mouthed at some of the most profound statements I’ve ever heard.

Quick Synopsis: Stu is a teenage wannabe rock star growing up in South Central LA in the 70s. During a marijuana-induced conversation with his youth minister, Franklin, Stew reveals his dream of immigrating to Europe and becoming a rock star. Franklin followed in his father’s ministerial footsteps, and until they had a rap session in the front seat of a VW Bug, he never admitted how much he regretted not pursuing his own dreams.

Franklin encourages Stu to follow his heart. Then, he sadly admits that he is trapped in the life his father created. It is worse than slavery, he asserts, because its entire existence is the result of fear. “Slaves have options: escape, rebellion, death. But cowards – only cowards have consequences.”

Man, powerful stuff.

Is there anything worse than slavery? A quick answer is “Absolutely not!” But, think about it a step further and you will get a different answer. fear

Being a slave to your own choices – or rather your inability to choose… is called cowardice. And as Franklin so profoundly noted: Cowards get results.

We all have options. Choosing not to choose is a choice. And we know that all choices have consequences. But when we let fear rule our decisions, it’s like saying, “I’ll take the rest of my life into my own hands.” Sorry, that’s not enough for me.

Making big choices is scary, no doubt. Anyone who has ever faced a life-changing decision knows that it can feel easy to walk away. But not choosing what you believe – what your heart tells you – means fear makes the choice for you. And then what is left? A result.

Do you think I’m promoting control freaks? Maybe I am! Because, well, I’m a control freak when it comes to my life. Penalty. I accept that. I don’t want to give up input and influence on the only life I have. why Will anyone?

If we avoid fearful things, we let fear choose—and that means we suffer the consequences of fear. No empowerment, no opportunity, no adventure, no possibility… just results.
