How to Overcome Stage Fright in Worship Ministry
I did a performance on a Friday.
Those of you who have been with me or listened to me for a while know that worship is for the participation, not the few. Over the years I have become more and more focused. Worship ministry, rather than performance, and thus getting better and better at leading worship instead of performance.
And so before going on stage for the Living Faith Church “Honor the Servers” program to perform two worship songs I wrote myself, I got stage fright again.
Yes, even after all these years.
I was later told that I had done well, which meant that the methods I used to win the stage worked. This article aims to share it with you.
The most important thing you need to know: All stage fright is based on two factors: 1) People are all focused on you; and 2) the feeling that you are losing control. So the secret to overcoming stage fright is to deal with these two factors.
So in regards to worship, you must turn people’s attention away from you and onto God as quickly as possible! Firstly, because it is your work as a worship minister and secondly, because it takes the pressure off you that you don’t have to bear to get the job done.
If you’re a worship leader, get people singing early or doing something together as a congregation. In general, in my opinion, it is quite unnecessary to pray and preach to the congregation before worship. It puts pressure on you (which you don’t want) and delays the start of worship (which they don’t want) and means you have to work harder to build momentum in worship once they do. let’s start
So if you can do it, do it well and still build momentum once you start worshiping, great! Personally, even after all these years of leading worship, I don’t do all those things.
Now, if you’re a worship musician or your rational mind (as it happened to me) volunteered your mouth to do something (as it happened to me), your struggle would be the second factor, the feeling that you’re losing control.
How can you deal with that situation? First, do a familiar preparation routine. It can be as simple as a familiar song intro style you use or washing and drying your hands the same way every time. This tells your subconscious mind that you are in control.
For me I would either keep moving (I wanted something to do that didn’t force me to talk) or pray for a relevant joke to use (many people in attendance that evening enjoyed my Thanksgiving-inspired joke about my voice). I knew I was still very much in control when people started laughing.
The keep moving method is one I don’t use these days, because people at church cringe when they see me doing stretching exercises (“Is he doing tai chi? Is that yoga???”), but you can do it. Easily find other ideas that you can adapt and use to suit your situation.
There were a few points I missed. For example, I had a mic in front of me during my song, so I closed my eyes while singing (and played a few chords wrong) to avoid staring at the mic. But overall I did ok. Sometimes it’s a question of how you choose to see the whole experience.
As I mentioned before, the worship songs were written by me, so I can look at the whole experience in two ways. I can determine the experience of performing my own worship songs. Writing something is very personal because you put so much of who you are as a person into it, and it’s very easy to interpret that as people rejecting who you are as a person.
Or I can look at it this way: because it’s my song no one else knows it. So no one else will know if I made a mistake or not. A lot less pressure, right? I choose to see it this way…
Of course, all these ideas are not a substitute for proper preparation. The two songs I used are scriptures that I love very much (from the book of hymns, surprised?) and two weeks ago I was using those two songs in my daily devotions and exploring which songs could be combined effectively. Those two songs. (Hey, once a worship leader, always a worship leader).
But sometimes even after we prepare a lot, we still suffer. This is where the ideas here come in handy. Try it out and let me know what you think?
