Words and Emotions
Most people habitually use only 500 to 2000 words of the entire English language (over 750,000 words), representing less than half a percent.
There are over 3000 words in the English language to describe emotions. 1051 words for positive emotions and 2286 words for negative emotions.
Roughly twice as many words to describe negative emotions. Consider the implications of this.
The words we use to label our experience become our experience.
The intensity of the words you choose becomes the emotion and the intensity of your final experience. Think about it. And try it for yourself.
What words do you regularly use to describe your feelings to others or to yourself?
When someone asks “How are you?” Do you answer “good thanks” or “okay” or “sensational” (my personal favorite and oft-used word) or “exceptional thanks”?
Even just reading the words gives a different intensity and experience.
Saying them out loud has more impact – especially when you use them to describe how you feel. Someone says “How are you?” Here are some other ways you can respond when asked.
Great, amazing, great, unstoppable, incredible, magical
Now part of you might be screaming inside… but I don’t feel sensational – they’re lucky if I answer nicely and don’t burden them with my real problems and tell them how it really is.
“And first was the word”
Ever heard of the saying “fake it ..til you make it”?
It works! But I don’t expect you to take my word for it.
Try it for yourself. The next time someone asks “how are you” choose to respond with a word that reflects how you feel…even if you don’t feel that way right now.
Say your sensational or excellent and watch and feel what happens.
I’m reminded of another saying… this is the original my memory fails me, but it goes something like “I don’t sing because I’m happy, I’m happy because I sing.”
When I first read it, many years ago now, it didn’t ring true to me.
When evaluating any new information I encounter, I ask myself many questions, and especially, “Is this my experience?” and “Does this sound real to me?”
And in this instance, it didn’t appear to be. My experience then was definitely that singing didn’t come to me unless I was happy … and I reflected on that time in my life where I just made a song … for no apparent reason – I wasn’t singing to anyone or anything … My initial reaction It remained the same. When I’m happy I sing… what a croc….
And then I asked myself another question “Is this true for me?”
Well, how would I know….if it wasn’t within my range of experience so far, I decided to try it for myself.
The next time I find myself choosing to describe life and experience it as less than happy … I start singing. out loud
I started with a song from my childhood – if your happy and you know it – clap your hands. I am sure many of you are familiar with it. This is a song that encourages active demonstration of your happiness through various physical activities including clapping your hands, tapping your feet, moving your body and anything else you can think of to add to it.
I challenge anyone – regardless of starting mood… to sing this song (standing up – full out) and see if they’re not happy by the end of the first chorus.
Another childhood favourite, equally effective, involves engaging your physiology in the process (adding motion – intensifies the feeling) and another that I’m sure many of you will be familiar with is the HOKEY POKEY.
Remember how much fun it is to “move it all”.
Is it even possible to do the HOKEY POKEY – stand up, sing, actively participate in the movements and not feel sensational?
Try it out and find out for yourself!
These are just a couple of songs that have worked for me and will continue to do so… You may want to experiment with different ones.
“I don’t sing because I’m happy, I’m happy because I sing”
