R Is for Rest in Triathlon Training
You need rest in your triathlon training to be successful and achieve all of your goals. Even professional triathletes need rest in their training. I’ve heard triathletes try to maintain 10-12 hours of sleep per night. For most of us, this is not possible with our family, work and training schedules. I know relaxation sounds intuitive for better results. It seems like you should push your body to its limits every day and see the benefits of this type of training. The problem is that you burn out before you see your ultimate potential.
Get a good night’s rest
An important part of rest is getting enough sleep at night. Triathletes need 8-10 hours of sleep per night. I know, I know it’s impossible. In fact, 4:00 am wake-up calls never leave enough time to sleep. I suggest trying to go to bed as early as possible by avoiding things like TV, Facebook, Netflix, video games and the like. This will help your training every day. If you don’t get enough sleep, you increase your chances of injury and burnout.
Rest during training
Triathletes want to train and they want to get better. They strive for more training to increase speed and strength. However, sometimes you hit a wall. Many triathletes are Type A individuals who live off the checklist. So, if exercise is scheduled for a particular day, they will do it no matter what. So whenever you hit a wall, you have to take the day off. I have found this to be very difficult to do unless I insist. However, I know that sometimes I just need a day off.
Rest between periods
You can’t train for months without rest without experiencing some surprising setbacks like injury and burnout. Therefore, it is important to determine when a race is approaching and count back from that date and set a 10-12 week training plan. Other time should be spent developing your aerobic base, working on form and skills, and low heart rate training for relaxation! Outside of race preparation you may need to take some breaks in your training. It will help your mental as well as physical condition.
If you want to see big gains in triathlon and get to the top, rest well.
