How to Strengthen Your Inner Life Even When Mourning

In working with many bereaved people I have discovered the basic foundation for better coping with the great loss we all experience. Yes, we all need each other or we can hardly bear the pain. But most importantly we need our own inner strength to face all this.

How do we get it? How can we accomplish the task of overcoming this difficult loss? Or next? They keep coming, because they are built into being human. We have no control over them. And how do we deal with that pain, that hellish pain that seems endless?

Changing the intensity of pain starts with changing your inner life, which determines the quality of your outer life. We are always choosing in everything we do. The basic choice that begins to change your inner life is: face pain as a state of love or resistance and withdrawal, separation from life and withdrawal.

Here’s how you start your most important task. These nine approaches will help strengthen your inner life as you deal with pain.

1. Appreciate love. Nothing is more important than impressing upon you that there is no healing without love, leaving you struggling to find the strength to get out of bed and start another grueling day. Medicine knows this and so do millions of mourners. The nourishment you receive from others (it is wise to find the nourishment you receive) and the love you give them in your life will be the most effective antidote to pain you will find. Be more loving even as you face your great loss.

2. Rely on your spiritual and philosophical beliefs. Cultivate the Divine Presence. Build or strengthen your existing belief that the love and compassion of a higher power will give you the endurance to get through the ordeal. If you have strayed from such beliefs, don’t be afraid to ask for help at this time; Then do regular spiritual practice. Your higher power will make you perfect and history will prove it.

Most of the mourners I have dealt with have stressed the importance of prayer and their spirituality to stay in one piece. We all need to turn to that deeper resource. Learn where you can find your personal sources of spiritual support and renewal. Then make peace of mind your primary goal at the start of each day.

3. Be open to new ideas in a world that will be completely different without your loved one. Be especially open to the wisdom of those who have experienced similar losses. Coping with a major loss is a learning process. Listen carefully to how others have coped in their time of need. Decide what you can use and let the rest go. Remember, to deal with change you have to change, so listen to what your heart is telling you too.

4. Take action. Inaction and isolation will guarantee that your pain will continue. On the other hand, examine your options. We must inject ourselves back into the world. Work, volunteer, walk the mall. Communicate with others. Study the occult and the unseen. Action releases and turns you need.

5. Observe your imagination and self-communication as important tools for dealing with change. What you see and say to yourself will lift you up or drag you down. Choose a word (compassion, love, caring, advice, etc.) or an affirmation (I am determined to adapt) that you will constantly go through your mind a hundred times a day. It has been proven time and time again, if you change the content of your thoughts, you will reduce your emotional pain.

6. Find a mentor or grief partner. Find someone you can really open up about how you feel on any given day. That person should be a good listener and give you feedback when you have questions. You need to recognize the feelings, not bury or ignore them. Let them out to free you from your emotional burdens. Emotions can easily influence your decisions. If you have no one to turn to, join a grief support group.

7. Meditate for 20 minutes a day. We all need quiet time every day. A proven way to manage emotions is meditation. Make it part of your daily self-care routine. Through trial and error, find a technique you like. For years, I used the following: Take a few deep belly breaths to relax. Then breathe in and silently repeat the Aramaic word, maranatha (inhale mar-a, exhale na-tha). Go slowly. If your mind wanders, gently return to your words.

8. Continue to communicate with your loved one. Talk to your deceased loved one as you go about your day to tell them how you feel and what you want. This is the most effective way to love in separation. Ask questions and see what answers come to mind. Pray for your loved one like many others. Say what you think. Imagine how he/she will respond.

9. Reevaluate your priorities and set your goals, if you don’t have one. Everyone needs one. It’s never too late to dream. You always have an opportunity to make a difference and serve others. Your inner life will be strengthened as you focus on your purpose and direction in life. A great loss redefines us. And never forget, we are what we consistently do.

In summary, as you review the above ways to strengthen your inner life, emphasizing their relationships—to people, to God, to yourself, to the deceased, realize a purpose. You will never outgrow your need for connection and the healing love they create because healing is always ongoing. We go from loss to loss. Start making connections today. Choose one of the above items now. Think about what specific behaviors you need and commit to strengthening your inner life.
