The Riddler Is No More, Who Should Fill the Void? Here’s My Top 5 Choices and Why
Well, it’s official that the Riddler will not be appearing in Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film. Nolan himself had previously confirmed with the film’s title (The Dark Knight Rises) that the Riddler would not be the villain. He also remained tight-lipped and wouldn’t reveal more about who the villain could be. With this news, speculation about a high-profile sequel has once again set the web abuzz. Again speculation is rife as to who the villain could be.
Today, we’re going to get into speculation and discussion as I give my top 5 picks for who the villain could be and who I want to see. Previously there were rumors of Killer Croc being the villain (and Tom Hardy playing him), I’m not too sure about that rumor and I don’t like the idea. So here we go with 5 villains I’d love to see in Nolan’s third Batman movie.
1.) Dr. Hugo Strange
Strange was a psychologist who created a serum that turned his victims into brutes that would mindlessly do his bidding. Using these brutes, he wreaks havoc on Gotham City. He was the first recurring villain in the Batman franchise and would be a great throwback for Nolan to complete the trilogy. Dr. Strange is also realistic enough to fit well into the universe Nolan has created with his interpretation of the world. Another issue in Hugo’s favor is his alleged relationship with the Scarecrow. As we know, the Scarecrow was used in Batman Begins (and to a lesser extent in The Dark Knight). In the comic book world, it has been suggested that Hugo was the one who came up with the idea for Scarecrow’s fear gas. It could be used as a tie-in for the third film. Perhaps the story could work out that Hugo Strange himself has returned to exact revenge on The Dark Knight and complete the job that the Scarecrow failed at. Strange also makes a crazy cock out of Sgt. Max Cort in Batman lore. Cort was an eccentric cop who was assigned by the department to lead a team to track down Batman. Furthermore, Strange recruits Cort to help out and kill Batman. If that doesn’t provide a perfectly logical step to The Dark Knight’s final “Because we want to chase him; we hunt him because he can take it,” I don’t know what does.
Hush (aka Tommy Elliott) is the Caped Crusader’s doppelganger. Having grown up with Bruce Wayne and being close to Bruce for so long, the two have a definite background. Hush has incredible intelligence and tactical skills that make him a formidable foe for the Dark Knight, on par with Batman. On top of that, Hush ties in with the story arc Nolan had already established with his first two Batman films. Hush has a relationship with Jonathan Crane (aka Scarecrow). Crane freed Tommy Elliott from the psych ward he was confined to. Also, Crane coined the name Hush for Eliot. This will provide a great lead-in to this particular story arc. That, combined with the fact that Hush is Batman’s equal in skill and abilities, could provide a very interesting feud and story. Also, it should be mentioned, Hush has ties to the Riddler. It would at least allow for an easter-egg like a mention of the Riddler for fans while still staying true to Nolan’s “villain won’t be the Riddler” comment.
Batman is gone and Gotham needs a replacement. Deadshot in steps. Deadshot, in the comics, initially came to light as a crime fighter. He may take on this role at the beginning of the film under the guise he fills for Batman. Later, however, it is revealed in the comics that Deadshot is not the good guy he tries to pretend to be. Instead he’s really out to replace Batman and plans to eventually take over Gotham’s underworld as the big dog. This would be a great tie-in to the third Batman film as the last film plays with the hidden aspect of the outed Batman. It can start with filling in for Deadshot and then getting progressively out of hand in his vigilante duties to the point where Batman has to come out of hiding to stop the villain. Admittedly, the costumes need to be toned down a bit to fit Nolan’s world, but it’s certainly possible.
Anarchy is a character of cunning and intelligence. His skills include immense talents in engineering and computer technology. This makes him an excellent gazetteer. Also, he is skilled in martial arts in the later comics. This makes Anarchy another formidable foe for the Caped Crusader, who shares the same abilities as Batman. His being a teenager may affect the appeal of the character, but if WB doesn’t want to go down the minor villain route, giving us a little older Anarchy could be worked on. Apart from that, it can fit well into an already established plot. With Batman out of the picture, crime gets a little worse….anarchic steps. Being a big fan of chaos, the villain can further condone and contribute to out-of-hand behavior. Being a master gazetteer, the police are unable to stop him as anarchy erupts. Batman has to return to “fight with fire” so to speak. Also, comics that include anarchy always have some social or political commentary behind them. I believe it fits perfectly with the underlying social/philosophical themes that Nolan has introduced in each of his Batman films and gives the story some extra weight.
5.) black mask
This villain is a businessman turned criminal. Black Mask leads a large organization of criminals after being humiliated and bought by Bruce Wayne. Being a typical “gangster” type, this would fit well with the current storyline since Falcone and the gang are out of the picture. With Batman also in hiding, this prevents Black Mask from controlling the criminal underworld to expand his organization. It could also be set up that because Wayne wants to keep Batman in hiding, he focuses more on his business. This leads to the infamous scene where Bruce Wayne buys Black Mask’s business. Black Mask’s hatred for Wayne then leads him to start his crime syndicate. In the comics he also goes to kidnap the Wayne Enterprises officers. This also eventually leads to the kidnapping of Lucius Fox. That would be a surefire way to take out Batman. From there Batman will have his work cut out for him as he has to infiltrate and take down the entire organization that has grown so big under the leadership of Black Mask.
So there you have it: 5 villains who would make logical choices for the finale in Nolan’s trilogy. Others may have their own preferences, but these are the 5 that I feel are the most likely and fit the world Nolan has created as well as the story depicted.
