Friends With My Brother – Never

Twenty years ago I couldn’t imagine being friends with my brother. I remember my mother saying, “One day you two will be best friends”. Every time she said it, I had only one word for her, “Never!”

It started from the day he first started talking. He couldn’t pronounce my name so he called me Tiff. Where he got the tiff from Katherine is beyond me. That was just the beginning.

When he started walking he would always go to my things and of course grab and throw them. On many occasions he has vandalized or damaged my treasures.

Then he started school, which was a nightmare. My mom asked me to help him with his homework, which he didn’t want to do at first. We would end up fighting because he didn’t want to finish his work.

But worst of all were his teenage years. He would hide my things, go through my things, do whatever he could to just blame me. I remember how I wanted him to grow up. He was constantly teasing me about something or the other.

And, as it happened, he grew up. I don’t know exactly at what age this happened. But, he did it. And strangely enough, we became best friends. I recently read a saying that really applies to my brother:

“You’ve had trouble before,

Then a brother,

And now my friend.”

Reading that saying made me laugh. I remembered all the things he was doing. My mother’s voice echoed in my mind.

Today my brother is a true friend. Someone I can count on in good times and bad. He has become more of a friend than a brother. While his occasional childhood teasing still comes up, I now realize what a great friend I have in him. I often quote his saying,

“When I count my blessings, I count yours twice.”

The possibilities in life are endless. And, I hope this story reminds you to never, ever say never!
