Becoming a Systems Administrator – A Realistic Look of What it Takes to Get There and Succeed!

Who are System Administrators?

You are a high school senior or unemployed individual considering this career path. This is a primer on the career choice of becoming a system administrator. It is an exciting career choice and offers incredibly lucrative rewards both financially and professionally that you can reap in this field. Also, there is something to consider. If you’re a bit of a “brain” and enjoy number crunching and complex equations and formulas, there’s a great deal of fame (or notoriety) you can get for yourself, on the operating systems and software side of the house, with Bill Gates, Michael Dell and Steve Jobs at home. On the hardware side.

In the year 2009, the term systems administrator has evolved to include several types of computer systems administrators (Sys Admin, Systems Admin, Systems Administrators, SA and CSA). Like many types of public key administrators, these administrators are actually encryption key administrators who deal more with the operating system and network operating systems (OS and NOS.) at the level of identity authentication in the network.

There are three exceptional ways to become a system administrator:

1. On the job training.

2. Trade schools and accelerated learning centers.

3. Formal education.

On the job training

This option may be a viable option for some students. But I advise against it. I choose this option initially, it is a “dead end” in the long run. A veritable black hole to get your career off to a very poor start. As your humble advisor I suggest you use the other two options and that’s the reason.

After leaving the military in 1993, I started at Morgan State University in the Administrative Computing Center. I excelled in the IT side of the job. I was told when Windows NT 3.51 (NT) Advanced Server first came out. Here’s your server and your operating system, you have a week to learn it or get fired! Oh, not meant to be a joke, it was true. So within a week I had the NT server up and running and my boss was very upset. Then someone put me in charge of the Northern LAN at the university and I just kept confusing my boss. So I left and went to T Rowe Price in Baltimore Maryland. Again my skills eclipsed many I worked with and this was without validation. Lack of certification and lack of necessary educational credentials hindered my career in the long run. Even after reaching MCSE 4, there was still a missing piece of the puzzle. Any kind of degree in information systems or computer sciences, so my career was stunted, there were times when I was making $12,000 a week as a consultant. Those times were few and far between. So believe what I say when I tell you, it’s not a choice to choose one of the following!

Trade schools and accelerated learning centers

In surveys conducted by Network World in 2008, they showed that many IT CIOs (including a survey conducted in CIO Magazine in 2008) were happy with most up and coming system administrators and network engineers. This is to inform you readers that almost all of these system administrators and network engineers were certified and many had at least an AA degree in computer science.

What this means for your readers is that getting “certified” and working toward a degree of your choice is a great way to find success in the systems administrator section of the broader IT field. Also, there are many internships available from various learning centers across the country and do you feel compelled to go to college? Many companies as well as federal, state and local municipalities will offer paid internships for you to participate in. Finally your college professors can direct you to many of their alumni who can put your foot in many companies. . Remember, get your degree. This move will be beneficial in the long run and will not limit you in terms of progress. Remember my example from the previous section, I was blinded by the money I was making and chose not to focus on the “end game” which is that your options are always “open” and not limited by lack or lack of certification. Graduation!

Formal education

This route is definitely the longest option of the three but can be the most rewarding. With this choice, a student considering becoming an administrator or engineer will have the most exposure to technology and a wide range of internships. In fact, the University of Phoenix, Morgan State University, and other universities and colleges have programs that will hire you by the time you graduate. Talk about job security, alumni of your chosen college can move mountains for you as a new collage grad. Often they are able to get you in the door with them at their current company or land you an “ice breaking” interview that will launch your career into the stratosphere.

The “most comprehensive” display of current technology exists in this way. At DeVry University in Arlington Virginia, they have access to the latest and greatest technologies in systems administration and network engineering for their information technology (IT) students. For undergraduate and graduate students in each respective college or university. Notably, DeVry offers degrees in both IT and Network Management. Not to be outdone by DeVry University’s Arlington Virginia campus, the ITT Institute in Springfield Virginia has a Cisco training lab as well as an “innovative” IT degree program with the “latest and greatest” Dell computers with removable hard drives. (HDD) technology in every new system.

Please note: Before deciding to attend the University of Phoenix (UOP) online through their AXIA College, I visited and toured each of the colleges above before settling on UOP. I must point out to my readers that you should shop around and compare what each education location has to offer. It is the “top priority” that no matter what path you choose to achieve success, choose the path that best suits your life.

What do system administrators make in an average workday in 2009?

Before answering this question I must ask you readers a question; do you like to read

An ongoing part of the work day that system administrators must do is “Read!” Yes, there’s a fire to put out, the Vice President of Finance and Management’s laptop is dead and needs to be restored to an image from the last backup of his system, the Director of Human Resources (DHR) desktop is infected with a virus, and finally there’s your intern. Breached security by copying music to his iPhone while connected remotely to his home PC. Having said all that, you must read on. A virus on a DHR system may be a new strain and the answer to its removal may be part of the latest security update from Microsoft or Norton. So now that that aspect of the work day is over, here are some other things we do throughout the day.

Yes, that’s the answer you’ve been waiting for; Now is the time to “fire the hot IT!” We are tasked with cloning or reimaging systems to be placed at all locations of the enterprise or company you work for. Fixing a viral infection on an employee’s system before it spreads through an email server, deploying and applying patches or updates to the OS of numerous servers or desktops.

Not only that, if you like to read? Then you’ll love this, all the reports you’re writing for high school now. Guess what reports you’ll need to write for a system administrator job. But, there is one thing to read about these reports. They are mostly repetitive, so it is possible to create what are known as “boiler plates”. Essentially boiler plate comes from the reports you write regularly. What you do with this is define the part of the report that doesn’t change and ignore that but focus on the parts that do. For system admins you can change things like: network up and down time, new and old systems in the network, system requests sent to Chief Information Officers (CIOs), employee performance reports and finally purchase orders for special services. What pitfalls should I avoid while climbing the necessary corporate success ladder?

Here are some general things you should live by. I will take the time to explain the weighty issue at the end of this section.

1. Get to work early, never be on time.

2. Keep personal issues out of work as much as possible.

3. Wait until you’ve proven yourself to be an asset before volunteering information about any problems.

4. Dating at work, don’t do it!

5. Remember Engineer Scotty’s rule from the original Star Trek series: Always say (of course) that a project or task will take longer than it actually will.

6. Always keep “excellent” records of all work done and work in progress.

7. Always, always be “professional”. Leave most jokes and humor to comedy clubs, cable television, or at home.

8. Never surf adult, gaming and some company sites which will not allow you to get sport scores.

9. Do not make any promises to any user that cannot be done for them within 24 to 48 hours.

10. Never (if you can help it or without permission) copy or take software from the site for home use.

Explanation of point number one: It’s good to be known as the person who carries coffee and donuts to work. For some reason when it comes to my IT experience most server and network issues have occurred first in the AM. This could just be a super secret bug that just happened to sneak up on me, but it pays to be the guy before the boss finesses a “major” issue and makes IT look cool.

Explanation of point number two: Please keep all personal issues of husband, wife, brother, sister and generally other family issues away from the workplace. It’s not good to be known as an employee with more personal issues and then work-related issues resolved.

Explanation of Point Number Four: Don’t be self-explanatory. If things go south in a relationship, sometimes emails and other personal things and rumors start circulating through the company. This is not good at all and you can get fired!

Explanation of point number five: It is easy if you know that a task takes two hours to complete. Just say it will take three hours, this will give you a cushion and if there are any problems. You should have the extra time you need to solve the problem without running into a “deadline”.

Explanation of the Sixth Point: This will cover you all the way and keep people who may be jealous of you for any reason beware. They and your boss will know that you take your job “seriously.”

Explanation of point number eight: I worked in an investment firm in Baltimore Maryland and I was working as a network engineer. A firewall administrator would surf porn sites and was caught doing this by a firewall administrator in Owings Mills Maryland. He was fired and spent more than six months looking for a job. He had a really bad mark on his record for years, so when I said “Don’t do it!” Trust me when I say.

Explanation of Point Ten: This can get you and possibly your company in real hot water. If you think the RIAA is bad (I know you teenagers know about the RIAA, many of you trade and download them from the internet and just hear stories about these guys) the Business Software Alliance (BSA) is no joke. I worked at a firm in Arlington Virginia that an employee reported to the BSA that there was illegal copying of software. The BSA reported to the FBI and shut down the company, and most of the IT department had to pay fines as well as the company. Also, I was a network engineer in charge of Morgan Stanley and had to fire a technician on the spot for stealing software. So, please do not copy or steal software from work.

I might be the boss who has to fire you for this, what a shame.
