A Few Reasons Why You Should Not Wear Running Shoes to Lift Heavy Weights

There are many people who go to the gym for weightlifting, but don’t have the right pair of shoes to work out. I have seen many weightlifters lift some serious weights wearing sneakers or running shoes. This can be very dangerous as well as significantly reduce performance.

Most people who shop for their first pair of “gym shoes” usually focus on looks and comfort because they don’t know that there are proper weight lifting shoes available in the market. Weightlifting shoes are designed for one purpose and running shoes or any other type of shoe should not be used for weightlifting for several reasons.

First, weightlifting shoes have stiff soles that are designed to increase stability and performance. The stability provided by hard soled shoes is much better than that of running shoes. The reason behind this is that when lifting heavy weights, the lifter must bend the knees and ankles to their maximum in order to go as low as possible. There’s a lot of force generated, and all that force can cause a lifter to lose balance if he doesn’t have a solid base to stand on, especially when he bends too much. Try lifting weights on a trampoline and you’ll see how difficult it is to stay still. A solid foundation is important for lifting heavy weights without losing balance.

Another important thing that a stiff sole does is that it helps the weightlifter use all of the power that is built to lift the weight. A running shoe, which always has a soft sole, will not only throw off your balance, but will dissipate all the energy to the ground. This significantly reduces the amount of weight a lifter can lift because much of the power generated to lift the weight is wasted.

Finally, the raised heel of the weightlifting shoe and its benefits must be discussed. When squatting (a technique used by weightlifters to lift a weight while going under a barbell), the lifter should keep both feet flat on the floor while bending the knees and ankles to their maximum capacity. But while bending so much it is impossible to keep both feet flat on the ground and instead the feet automatically rest only on the balls and toes. It’s just common sense to have both feet flat on the floor when lifting heavy weights. Weightlifting shoes can take care of this with a raised heel. The raised heel fills the gap between the heel and the floor and allows for maximum stability.

So the next time you go out to buy a pair of gym shoes, make sure you get the right weightlifting shoes, not running shoes. You may think it’s a waste of money but once you wear them you’ll immediately notice the difference and won’t regret spending on your new weightlifting shoes.
