For businesses that want to promote their brands, products, and services online, Facebook pages are one of the best options because of the traffic that can be generated when Facebook users “like” their pages. However, most users don’t realize that when these pages are “liked” or the application is authorized, the developer of the application or page can access all of the friends’ private information, including their fan names. Lists, locations and any other content that is marked as available to everyone. Of course, this can pose a real security risk, especially when these accounts are hacked by people who want to make a quick buck off of other people’s personal information.

For example, people who authorize a particular company’s application or fan page allow this company to access their personal email. When these are shared, spammers, identity theft criminals and hackers can now come into play through various strategies and techniques to gain access to more personal information.

Trust issues: Companies must trust Facebook

Given the current Facebook privacy settings and security, the decision to trust Facebook to secure their fan pages should be left to the company’s discretion. Many critics are campaigning against Facebook, offering extreme advice such as don’t open an account on the popular social networking site or close any account of any user for now. Pages can boost a company’s revenue, and companies should strive for tighter security and, if possible, include strong security measures such as anti-virus software to protect not only the company’s fan pages, but their “fans” as well.
