Globalization Among Technology: How Is International Business Affected?

Have you ever wondered where your phone or computer came from? Every piece of equipment works in production and assembly. There are many products that are manufactured domestically, but the number of companies transferring their products to other countries is increasing every day due to increased expected profits. This is an example of globalization. Specifically, companies like Apple can manufacture their phones, computers, and tablets overseas for less than it costs to manufacture them domestically in the United States. New technologies in companies like Apple have allowed globalization resulting in negative impacts on global business through factors such as location, customers, and competing organizations. Yes, international factories can produce parts cheaply, but at what cost to a global business?

Customers are the main reason for business success. Without customers, companies would waste valuable resources and capital creating products or services that are not purchased. People all over the world are so mesmerized by Apple products that they spend huge amounts of money on them. The price of these products does not change regardless of the country where they are sold. However, if the customer cannot afford the product, they may not purchase the product. This is especially true for those living in the United States if businesses like Apple, among many others, are moving their jobs overseas. Similarly, overseas, technology manufacturing businesses are being paid on the dollar. This results in low wages for workers and the inability to purchase products in return. Thus, the international expansion of technology through globalization negatively affects the company in terms of customer purchasing volume.

Many companies initially manufactured their products domestically. The desire for a greater return on investment has led more companies to consider or commit to expanding these operations internationally through globalization. Potential new businesses in the U.S. are not looking to domestically produce or create new products because they fear they will not be able to compete with international rivals or companies that use outsourcing. As a result, it can be too early an expansion for a new business and can have a huge negative impact on their profitability. The lack of opportunities to produce domestically has reduced the number of jobs and drained funds from the economy in many ways. By not producing a physical product, but still consuming it in the United States, the economy is still receiving taxes from the production or sale of the good. However, the economy is losing income tax collected from factory workers, as well as money that those same workers would spend on boosting our economy if they did not outsource their jobs. This means that consumers will spend less money on products manufactured by companies like Apple.

On the other hand, globalization in technology also has negative effects at the international level. This affects business globally. As mentioned earlier, companies get pennies on the dollar for the products they produce, which leads to poor working conditions and wages for the people working in these jobs. Poor wages for workers are directly related to the inability to purchase essential items such as iPads, MacBooks or iPhones. So, using globalization, Apple is technologically limiting the number of products it can sell. Continuing with this thought, it is well known that Apple factory workers have committed suicide because they were fed up with their conditions. The reasons behind this may be the negative stigma and reputation associated with Apple, which leads to additional units not being purchased. All this would be due to the early effects of globalization and illustrates how complex the issues arising from globalization can be.

Globalization of technology is also affecting competing companies. For example, when Company One outsources production of their products, there are many negative impacts on similar businesses. Sales opportunities for other companies are lost because Company One can sell its product at a significantly lower price due to market dominance for consumer interest. Consumers look for cheap goods with available supplies. Supply is greater because larger producers can produce more at lower prices, which further increases demand. Company One cannot compete with Company One because their cost of bringing the product to market is significantly lower.

The effects of globalization on business are so serious that a company’s outsourcing decision requires more emphasis on discussing the pros and cons. While this may make the company more profitable, they must consider the lengths they are willing to go to achieve this goal. They should know the effects of globalization on their country as well as international countries. While outsourcing may be positive in itself, low wages, poor working conditions and poor mental health are dire consequences for overseas workers. Likewise, negative effects on one’s own economy and on competitors must be considered. The money that drives and circulates through its own economy is now in another country. Additionally, competitors in the same industry will struggle to survive and may be forced to go out of business. None of these factors are positive for the country. Finally, the most important point about globalization is the long-term impact it will have on global business. Profits may be high at first, but overall, globalization affects consumers and all countries to such an extent that sales volume is likely to decrease over time. This clearly defeats the main objective of globalization for a company.
