What Are Your Long Term Career Goals – Job Interview Question
This open question, and others like it; “Where do you see yourself in five years?” Leave the balance to most candidates. The purpose of the question is to test your self-awareness and communication skills.
Dan Harrison is a personnel manager at Wesco Corporation and will be interviewing three candidates for the position of project manager. He is looking for someone with planning and foresight skills.
Phil Holmes describes his goal – “to be a marketing manager within five years and have a hand-picked team.”
This is a very specific and narrow objective, which may not be an option in this company. A “hands up” team shows a lack of flexibility. It is best to stay away from a very specific goal.
Shauna Green answers – “I’ve been so busy with my responsibilities and achieving company goals that I haven’t focused on personal long-term goals.
While a strong work ethic is certainly desirable, this answer does not reflect foresight or planning.
Marsha Severson says – “I plan to go back to school to get my MBA and one day own my own consulting business.
Although it pays to be honest, this answer can turn the interview in the wrong direction very quickly. Employers are looking for someone to stick around for the long haul, not stop at a new career path.
Focus – exercise
If you are the type of person who prefers an organized way of life, you may find this question a “piece of cake”. But, if you’re among the majority of people who let life happen as it comes, you won’t have a smooth answer without some forethought.
* What are your goals? – Thinking about what you want will get you better answers. Most successful business people will tell you that a key factor in success is the ability to set and achieve goals.
Start by setting short-term goals. Right now your goal may be to “get a job”. But what kind of job? And, where to go from there?
* Be employer-focused – the employer is looking for someone to come in and solve the problem. Since planning is an important factor in this work, think of examples of where your planning made a difference in the results.
scripting
After giving some thought to where you want to go and how you can help the employer achieve results, try scripting your answers to stay focused.
I’ve learned that long-term goals are best achieved when I break them down into smaller goals. My short-term goal is to find a position that will place me in a moving company with good performance and future projections. As part of the team, I want to add value and grow the company. My long-term goals will depend on where the company goes. My plan is to move into a position of responsibility where I can lead a team.
No one can tell you exactly how to answer this question – it’s up to you. However, the more focused and employer-centric you are, the more likely you are to steer your goals in the right direction.
