Is The Abortion Pill And The Morning After Pill The Same?
What is the “abortion pill”? Are the abortion pill and the “morning after pill” the same thing? The abortion pill and the morning after pill are not the same medication, and they each work differently. This article is for information purposes so that you can differentiate between the morning after pill and the abortion pill.
The Morning After Pill, also commonly known as Plan B, is the popular name for numerous brands of birth control pills containing the hormone levonorgestrel. These pills can be used to prevent ovulation and may not harm an existing pregnancy if taken as directed. In California, birth control pills do not require a prescription.
The abortion pill is a medicine called Mifepristone, Mifeprex, or RU486 and is available only by prescription. Mifepristone, when used in combination with Misoprostol, interrupts an existing pregnancy (but not if the pregnancy is an ectopic pregnancy – a separate procedure or medication will be required). It is now approved for use up to 70 days (10 weeks) after a woman’s last menstrual period to terminate a pregnancy early. Mifepristone is only available with a doctor’s prescription, at your local pharmacy such as Walgreen’s Pharmacy or CVS Pharmacy.
Interrupting an existing pregnancy while using these pills is a two-part method. Mifepristone, or Mifeprex, is an anti-progesterone that terminates pregnancy by blocking the progesterone hormone receptors on the uterine wall. This causes the lining of the uterus to shed during menstruation. It softens and expands the uterus, thus facilitating abortion.
Misoprostol is used to terminate pregnancy. Misoprostol is a prostaglandin that induces uterine contractions and softens and dilates the uterus. It is usually used about two days after taking Mifepristone to complete the abortion procedure. When used in combination with mifepristone, abortion is completed approximately 97% of the time.
After taking a mifepristone and misoprostol regimen, it is common to experience pelvic cramping and vaginal bleeding and spotting, along with passing tissue and blood clots, for an average of 9-16 days. Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, fever, chills, weakness and diarrhea are also common.
A follow-up visit 7-14 days after taking the abortion pill is very important to ensure that there is no tissue left behind and that the abortion has been successful. If mifepristone does not work as determined by ultrasound during a follow-up visit, a woman will discuss her options with her provider.
