Drinking Water During Meals to Help Your Acid Reflux, Burning and GERD? Don’t!
Did you know that heartburn is caused by too little stomach acid instead of too much acid as is often said?
A lack of stomach acid prevents complete digestion, especially of the undigested carbohydrates that contribute so much to your heartburn and gas.
If that’s true, why do people insist that drinking lots of water with meals is helpful? Drinking too much water can work against you when it comes to acid reflux.
Let’s be clear, when acid is in the esophagus, drinking a little water can be helpful to flush the acid out and provide relief. And drinking enough water is a good thing.
A better solution (no pun intended) is to try to prevent those acids from forming in the first place! And drinking water between meals can worsen your acid reflux. Here’s why:
Your stomach needs acid to digest food!
Think about it. What does water do? It dilutes and weakens things. We use water to dilute all kinds of things. Water-based paints, cooking sauces, salad dressings and more.
So doesn’t it make sense that if we put a lot of water (which contains acid) into our stomach when we eat, our stomach acid will become diluted, weaker and less effective?
This leads to incomplete digestion of food.
Undigested food stays in your stomach longer, causing gas, bloating and pressure that can worsen your acid reflux symptoms.
Remember, acid reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) opens too often or doesn’t close tightly enough. This sphincter is supposed to close to keep stomach acid in.
Drinking water with food fills the stomach. Your full and bloated stomach can put pressure on the LES. A leak into the esophagus can occur when pressure forces the contents of the stomach open.
There seems to be certainty about drinking water. I used to drink water when I felt thirsty. Now there is a false concern about being “dehydrated” as people get around their water bottles to 8 glasses a day.
Bass is bass.
If you experience painful heartburn, acid reflux problems, and GERD, in addition to a sip or two, try not to drink water with your meals and let your stomach acid do its thing.
Try this, and I think you’ll be well on your way to a healthy gut.
