Symptoms of chronic dehydration include heartburn, constipation, anxiety, urinary tract infections, premature aging, and high cholesterol.

Just drinking water regularly throughout the day keeps all the essential functions working. You can prevent many diseases that can be treated with harsh pharmaceuticals that often create their own list of unwanted side effects. During the warm summer months or during periods of exercise, increase water consumption as your body removes a lot of water through sweat to keep you cool – another benefit of staying hydrated.

Your blood is about 92 percent water. Maintaining water levels in your blood helps in efficient blood flow to the organs and helps prevent high blood pressure. It is also critical during times of sleep and stress when the body produces hormones to help keep the body strong and balanced. A well-hydrated body also controls the production of histamine, which controls your immune system’s response to allergens and other factors. Overproduction of histamines can cause allergy symptoms such as stuffy nose, itchy eyes and sneezing.

Your body needs water to flush out toxins. Two systems are responsible for eliminating most toxins from your body. The first is our skin. If you’re dehydrated, your skin holds toxins that we would otherwise have removed, and you can get skin irritation. The second is your digestive system. Water helps move food through your digestive tract, allowing toxins and pathogenic microbes to be naturally flushed out. Constipation can lead to bladder infections, ulcers, acid reflux and other digestive disorders including irritable bowel syndrome.

Sometimes we misinterpret thirst signals and assume that we are hungry instead, even though we have eaten a short time ago. In a dehydrated state, your cells scream for sustenance and your brain signals you to get more food. Keeping yourself hydrated provides a better supply of water to the cells and you can avoid inadvertently putting on extra pounds.

Caffeinated drinks like coffee and soda are not good choices for hydrating your body. They are natural diuretics, which speed up the dehydration process. Sugary drinks, such as soda, juice drinks and new flavored water products, provide your system with too much sugar, which only causes other health and weight gain problems. Drink plain, pure water frequently and throughout the day. Start the day with lukewarm water and add some lemon juice to it. Pay attention to early signs, such as thirst or hunger, when you shouldn’t and drink some water immediately to stay hydrated and keep your body performing at its best.
