The Most Common Causes of Blocked Ducts in HVAC Systems
Is your HVAC system struggling to keep your home cool in the summer and/or warm in the winter? The problem may not be with your furnace or your air conditioner. It may actually be in your ducts. When you turn on your HVAC system, whether you’re heating or cooling your home, air must flow evenly through all of your ducts.
You can check for duct blockage by turning on your HVAC system, waiting a few seconds for your compressor or furnace to start, and then physically inspecting each of your vents. All you need to do for this check is hold the back of your hand in front of each vent. If one of your vents is blocked, you may notice less air moving through that vent.
Now, it’s time to call a professional HVAC contractor, but this can also be a problem you can fix yourself if you know the most common causes of blocked ducts in HVAC systems. Let’s discuss these reasons and how you can fix them.
Closed or blocked vents
This is the most common and easily overlooked reason why you are not getting air from your vents. Check to make sure your vent is really open. You don’t want to waste money going out to a contractor for a problem that you can flip a lever to fix.
Many people face a similar problem that can be solved with a little remodeling and/or rearranging the furniture. If your room isn’t getting enough heating or cooling and the vents aren’t getting enough air, make sure they aren’t blocked by furniture, boxes, etc. before you call an HVAC expert.
Closed air filter
How long has it been since you changed your air filter? They should ideally be changed once a month. If not, they’ll get clogged with debris, hair, dust, and pet dander, and they’ll stop pumping the right amount of air through your ducts. Check and replace your air filter and then check your vents again to see if the ducts are still clogged.
Damaged or leaking ductwork
If one or more seams in your ductwork are damaged or unsealed, air will escape through these points instead of being pushed through your vents. Depending on where the leak is or how many leaks you have, you may need to do some repair work or you may need to replace your pipes.
If you have a blockage in your ducts that you can’t clear by changing the filter or vacuuming the ducts, call an HVAC contractor for an inspection and estimate right away. The longer you keep inefficiently pumping air into your home, the higher your utility bills will be. It will also tax your HVAC system, which can lead to further repairs. To save money and energy, fix this problem as soon as possible.
