"Avoid Danger In Negotiations – How To Control Conversations Better" – Negotiation Tip of the Week

The beggar did not accept my answer for the first few times. So, I had to change my word delivery. By changing the tone of my response and sounding more hostile, the panhandler perceived my, no, response as more definitive. That is why he left there.

Consider the following techniques to increase your control as you negotiate with those you may try to antagonize or those you wish to control better.

  • Block and Bridge

Block and Bridge is a way to change the flow of a conversation. You will apply it when the conversation starts to go in an unwanted direction – one that you fear will cause you to lose control of the discussion or interaction. You can consider using it when you want to increase the flow of the conversation.

To use it, when someone starts making statements you disagree with or citing accounts that don’t align with where you want to have the conversation, block their comments. For example, you can say, you have a point (block), and the result was less than expected (pull). I suggest we take the following approach. It is known to have good results.

The way you block someone’s comments depends on the severity of the situation. If it becomes too irritating, you might consider blocking the other person’s statement with harsh tones and words. If it is not necessary, consider being gentle in your nature and behavior.

  • Answering questions with questions

Answering questions with questions is a great way to gather more information than you provide. It also allows you to control the conversation. Because the person asking the question controls the flow of the discussion. And this happens as long as the other party is answering the questions.

To implement this strategy, ask the question in response to the question you are asked. Do this instead of answering the initial question. That way, instead of answering that question, you’ll answer with your own answer.

For example, if someone says, Do I have to do this action? Your response might be, What do you think will happen if you don’t take this action? You have not answered the question. And if you get a response, you’ve gained more insight into that person’s thoughts. Along with possible solutions to the situation if you choose to implement that person’s response.

  • Listening to what is not said

Many people consider themselves to be good conversationalists because they pay attention to what someone is saying. In fact, you can become a better communicator and control conversations better by observing what someone is not saying.

For example, if someone says, I didn’t do what you said. You can think of a person’s answer as meaning, I didn’t do what you did. Yes, I did, but not as you described it.

By listening to what is not said and responding to how something is said, you will gain better insight and control over someone’s statement. You will also learn more about how the person is communicating. And it will be worth its weight in gold.

In each environment and in each negotiation, think about how you will control that environment. In particular, think about how you would avoid dangerous situations, what controls you would use, and where that might take you in your encounter. Because the better you control the conversation, the more power and control you will have in every negotiation and situation… and all will be right with the world.
