3 Exercises to Increase Your Vertical Leap
In sports like basketball and volleyball, the fastest runner doesn’t necessarily excel. It is usually able to jump higher than the other person, so a great way to gain an edge over other players is to increase the vertical leap.
The height to which people can jump varies considerably. Figures for professional athletes such as basketball players and NFL receivers range from about 28 inches to nearly 50 inches, with most in the neighborhood of 40 inches. If you’re on the lower end of that range (or don’t do it at all) and want to increase your vertical leap, here are some easy, inexpensive ways to do it:
– Squats: The large muscles in your thighs and hips are integral to propelling you into the air. The stronger and more powerful these muscles are, the better you will jump. To increase the vertical leap, you really want to get these muscles in good shape, and that means doing squats—and more.
– Calf Exercises: Your calf muscles are also there when it comes to jumping. To strengthen your calf muscles, stand on a stable piece of wood about three inches thick. With your toes on the block of wood and the edge of your heels, begin by slowly lowering your heels until they touch the floor (if that’s easy, get a thicker block of wood). Hold the position for a few seconds, then slowly raise back up. Be sure to do this exercise in a slow, controlled manner so you don’t injure your Achilles tendon. You can also do this exercise on the stairs or curb.
– Jump: If you want to increase your vertical leap, practice the jump you do. If you’re playing basketball, stand under the basket and repeatedly jump for it, trying to touch the net (and reach the rim if you can touch the net). Make every jump deliberate; Pause between jumps to get into position and then jump. If you are playing volleyball, stand in front of the net, reaching either the top of the net or the top point of the net which is your goal. Again, make sure each jump you make is focused and deliberate so your body knows what it feels like to jump.
Even natural born players have to work to improve their skills. If you want to learn to increase your vertical leap, like the pros, you need to work at it. But, if you put in the time and effort, you’ll soon see a significant improvement in how high you jump.
