I Think I Now Know How Noah Felt

Looking out of the living room window, the gracious Mistress of the Parsonage sighed deeply and said, “When will this stinking rain stop?”

I smiled very carefully not to let anyone in the room get it on the surface of my face.

She turned around and said to me, “I got all this rain.”

With a fake scowl on my face I said, “I don’t know, but I have too.”

I had to leave at that point as I couldn’t contain the grin that was rising to the level of my face.

As I regained control of my emotions, I thought to myself, this is how Noah must feel. As it rains lately, I often think of Noah. Only this time I was thinking of Noah’s wife.

Listening to my wife talk about the rain, I couldn’t help but think that’s exactly what Noah’s wife was saying to him.

“Noah,” said his wife, “when will this stinking rain stop?” Then I can imagine her saying, “I can handle the rain for a day or two, but this is getting ridiculous.”

After all, Noah’s wife was just like anyone else’s wife, especially the gracious mistress of the parsonage.

Knowing my wife as I do, I know she likes to be in control. She likes to be in control from the time she wakes up in the morning until she goes to bed at night. When something happens that she cannot control, our situation is different.

Can the same be said of Noah’s wife? It rained day after day for 40 days and 40 nights. Nothing like this had happened before. I believe that Noah’s wife was a little disappointed that she could not control the rain.

My wife wakes up every morning with a long list of things she wants to accomplish during the day. I need to be careful because sometimes she has one of her “honey-do-lists” you know. She is very productive in her days and rarely sits down to rest. She is active throughout the day.

When she decides to do something, she does nothing.

Now, it has been raining every day for the past several weeks. She also enjoys working in the yard and mowing the lawn. Now her schedule has been disrupted due to rain.

The fact that she can’t control the rain makes me smile a little hidden inside. She takes pride in planning her day and completing her plans to the letter. She controls everything.

Everything, that is, except the rain. I know the rain is playing with her.

Most of the time, especially this past week, mornings started out bright and sunny with only a few clouds in the air. When my wife saw it, she was very excited.

“At last,” she said almost hysterically, “I can harvest a little.”

With that, she was smiling and very excited and ready to go out to do some harvesting.

I think a hidden cloud somewhere was watching her because she got out and as soon as she turned on the mower it started to rain.

She hurriedly put away the harvest and came inside to dry it.

She came in and as soon as it got a little dry, the rain stopped, the clouds cleared and the sun began to shine. She looked outside and with a big smile on her face she said, “Finally this rain is over.”

She got out, got the lawn mower out and got ready to go and was mowing for five minutes and I could see that smile on her face as I watched. She loves nothing more than riding that lawnmower and keeping the lawn looking beautiful.

Suddenly I heard distant thunder and then rain.

As quickly as possible, she put away the lawnmower and ran inside with the raindrops. I did my best to get out of her way because this was not one of her “happy moods”.

The rest of the day she worked in her craft room and I heard her say under her breath “Rain, rain go away and never come back any other day”. I sympathize with her because the rain prevented me from doing some things.

If only the rain can’t control my wife, she is a very lucky person. I, for example, cannot control many things in my life. I would love to, but it’s not in the cards for me.

I can’t imagine that Noah sat in that ark for over a year and couldn’t control anything. This is the essence of faith. Why do I need God if I can control the situation?

I need to exchange my pride for faith in God. This reminds me of one of my favorite Bible verses. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

The best things in my life are those out of my control where I can see God at work in those situations.
