Why Pace is Important When Delivering a Speech
Have you ever attended a keynote or seminar where the speaker felt like they were trying to cover 2 hours of material in 15 minutes? The rest of you are tired, aren’t you?
Or maybe you’re in one of those endless lectures where the speaker drones on and slowly says every word in big round letters? Hey, sleep might have been better after the first speaker, right?
What you have experienced is a case of sloppy public speaking.
Okay, enough with the euphemisms and nonsense. The problem, however, is a case of poor speed. (Oops, sorry about that.) In this article I’m going to explain why speed is so important when giving a speech. Or at least I’m going to give you five reasons why you should consider your speed when speaking in public.
1. Varying your pace helps keep your audience interested. One of the reasons why droning professors give such boring lectures is because their pace is consistent. It doesn’t matter if it’s too fast or too slow. But keeping your pace consistent is a surefire way to get your audience screaming. Your voice is your tool. For interest, sometimes you have to play a measure faster, and sometimes you have to play it slower.
2. Your pace affects your audience’s ability to follow what you’re saying. If you talk too fast for too long, your audience is having trouble hearing what you’re saying. Basically, your ability to talk wears them out quickly and they wander off looking for some inspiration that’s a little easier to follow. If you speak too slowly, your audience will get bored and wander off in search of more excitement.
3. Your pace shows your passion for your subject. When we feel strong emotions, we naturally start speaking faster. When we are thoughtful, our speech slows down. You can use your momentum to show your audience your emotions. Your emotions make you more human. And they make our subject matter more clearly. If you let go of your emotions, your audience will accept you better and your pace will naturally change.
4. Your pace affects your nervousness. Strong emotion affects the speed of your speech. And that includes the feeling of fear. But it’s a two-way street. When you’re nervous — like speaking in public — you naturally tend to speak quickly. If you speak too soon, your fear will become stronger. It becomes a circle of reinforcement.
5. Hobbies end sooner or later. One thing you always want to do as a professional speaker is to finish on time. Of course, no one is perfect but the more flexible your pace, the harder it will be to predict how long your speech will be. It is important to estimate how long the actual speech will be. And to do that you need to be able to recognize where you’re going to be emotional and where you’re going to be thoughtful.
