Enhancing The Human Condition

Back in the college there was an old professor standing tall in the lecture hall. A voice that wakes up even the sleepiest of us sitting on those wooden chairs that God made today with all the technology and surely the universities are so barren. I remember it like it was yesterday. Professor Franklin we’ll all call him. White shirt, bow tie, elbow patched brown sport coat and always those gray pants. Undoubtedly it was a trademark. Everyone knew Professor Franklin.

But, one particular day in late autumn, the topic of his lecture was “Humanity, Humility, Benevolence and Compassion in an Otherwise Unforgiving World.” Vietnam was tormenting young men who could not push their students forward. Dissatisfaction with radical ideas was widespread on almost every college campus. I still remember, yes, sitting in those god awful stiff wooden chairs and listening to Professor Franklin’s every word with feverish intensity. What he said still resonates today. He said that every person, regardless of their status in life, rich or poor, black or white, Catholic, Protestant or Muslim, at some point in their lives has something important, relevant or worth writing about. But, it is up to the rest of us to hear, hear or see; Because they may say or write something so profound and so important that perhaps the course of humanity will indeed become more humane, more kind and more benevolent to their fellow man. Everyone has a story to tell.

And so Professor Franklin went on to say that mankind has faced the extremes of the human condition throughout history. Man-made plagues, wars, and other atrocities have sustained humanity and expanded the human experience. Through the ages the ingenuity of a few has enabled societies to achieve a degree of prosperity, but billions of people around the world await the time when they can enjoy the growth of their own human experience.

We all have the will to live. Humankind has persevered against all odds, and to some extent many have actually been able to thrive. It has been predicted by others and is a dominant factor in why millions of people have yet to elevate their own human experience.

In the animal kingdom nature has made the strong survive and destroy the weak, the sick die and the healthy live. Today, humanity through its ingenuity has made it possible to heal the sick and provide the potential for better health and enhanced human experience. The sad fact is that many people are denied the tools and availability to elevate their own human condition.

Now, we have to ask whether societies are capable of deploying the necessary resources to enhance the human experience to the point where mankind is free from need and free from fear. Can mankind enable all to elevate the human experience to create balance in our world today? These questions are critical and must be addressed not only to save our planet but also to save ourselves.

We have to realize that the world is undergoing dramatic changes in our climate, the social structure of societies around the world, and the lack of response from governments to reform and implement policy directives that would help create a more balanced world.

Nearly 50 years later, the world I knew is no more. It is as if the world has forgotten, failed to recognize and completely ignored what Professor Franklin lectured so many years ago. When he spoke of humanity, humility, compassion and benevolence in an otherwise kind world, little did he or I realize that today the number of instances where man has shown his inhumanity, his extreme lack of compassion and benevolence has increased alarmingly. Man and nature have impoverished practically every nation to such an extent that their future stability is seriously threatened.

Throughout history man has commandeered fresh water resources as a means of subjugating others to gain power and control. Today, as drought conditions reach epidemic proportions worldwide, technological advances already made by humans have reduced the suffering of millions of people who currently lack sufficient fresh water. It is fresh water resources that are the most important factors that enhance the human experience around the world.

Humanity is reaching a critical point in its history with years of denial about what humans have done to mankind and our environment. Global warming has already created catastrophic conditions around the world. And it’s only getting worse. The results we are witnessing today are devastating. Without fresh water, food resources are depleted, contributing to the increasing vulnerability of nations, the rise of infectious diseases, and population instability.

With many areas in the United States today facing dire shortages of fresh water, it is imperative that Congress act together. Unfortunately, the obstructionism that has dominated the political landscape for years has exacerbated the many crises we face as a nation. Fresh water is increasingly scarce, food prices are on the rise and there is very little availability of affordable housing today. All of this has worsened the human experience of millions to the point that many are hopelessly stuck with little or no hope of improving their situation. It is too bad that Professor Franklin’s words have been forgotten.

In this 21st century the human experience should be elevated where society will be the beneficiary of all the scientific, medical and technological miracles that have been created. The inaction of our Congress and governments around the world to address and implement the necessary reforms and policy directives that would greatly improve human conditions around the world is despicable. Today we are experiencing a reluctance to collect any real help to ease the burden of many where it is most needed.

The trials and tribulations we face remain unanswered not only as a global community, but as individuals. The power structures under which governments have ruled and are still facing the world today can solve many of the problems. What we are witnessing at the government’s own will is a tremendous increase in the disintegration of society.

The cause of direct action to prevent the devastating consequences of not intervening in preventive measures is crucial to enhancing the human experience for all of mankind. Implementing the necessary reforms and policy directives made possible by our technological advances is imperative for the future of all mankind.
