Teenagers Should Be Allowed to Work During School Holidays – What Is Your Opinion?
Nowadays, it is not strange to see many teenagers working part-time as promoters or sales girls during school holidays. Parents are willing to allow their children to work part-time so that their children spend their school holidays well without spending time surfing the internet and playing computer games. However, some parents do not allow their children to work part-time because they feel that their children are not mature enough to work. In my opinion, I partially agree that teenagers should be allowed to work during school holidays because teenagers can earn their own pocket money, learn enough knowledge through work and it will affect the academic performance of teenagers.
School holidays are defined as a period for students to rest and get away from their school routine. So, a task is defined as the physical or mental activity performed to accomplish it and is rewarded in monetary terms. One point I would like to highlight is that teenagers can earn pocket money by working during school holidays. For example, those who work as promoters in shopping malls can earn RM5 per hour as their extra income. Thus, the burden on their parents can be reduced as teenagers do not need to ask their parents for pocket money for daily expenses. Teenagers can save the money they earn from working to buy the reference books and stationery they need. So, parents don’t have to worry about school fees as their children can go out on their own. Teenagers can also afford to buy things like phones, laptops and shoes. In short, teenagers should be allowed to work during school holidays because of the extra income they can earn.
Moreover, teenagers can gain a lot of knowledge by working during school holidays. This is due to the fact that they will have the opportunity to be exposed to working life at an early age. Thus, they will be more experienced and will know ways to deal with people from different social and economic backgrounds. They also know how to cooperate with other people to complete the given tasks. Hence, their social skills, a criterion for reaching the stars in their future jobs, can be enhanced. They will be able to express their thoughts clearly to their colleagues and supervisors. Adolescents may also know ways to manage time because they need to complete the jobs assigned by their supervisors within the given time. So they will learn to be punctual. They will become more independent as they will have to find effective ways to solve any problems they encounter at work. In short, students’ knowledge can be enhanced through work and therefore teenagers should work during their school holidays.
However, teenagers should not spend most of their school holidays working part-time as this may affect their academic performance. Teenagers should spend their school holidays attending more tutoring classes or seminars and doing more revision. As a result, they can prepare and perform well in their academic field. On the contrary, if teenagers use most of their time in work, they will not have time to revise and exercise from reference books because teenagers who are tired after working cannot concentrate on their studies. Therefore, teenagers who do not repeat them during their school holidays will find it difficult to complete their studies when the next session resumes. Their academic results will suffer due to lack of revisions. In summary, teenagers should not work during their school holidays as it will interfere with their academic performance.
Finally, teenagers should be given the flexibility to work during school holidays so that they can earn extra income and enhance their knowledge. On the contrary, it is undeniable that working part-time during school holidays can affect their academic performance. Thus, teenagers must constantly strive to balance need and desire so that they can perform well in academics.
