Inspiration Ethics – The Value of Integrity

Integrity – Noun; Steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code; the state of being infirm; Soundness The quality or state of being whole or undivided; completeness

The date is 16 January 2009. The day after US Airways Flight 1549 pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s flight from Danville, CA, his overcrowded passenger jet overran New York City and plunged it — successfully — into the Hudson River. All 155 passengers and crew are safe and miraculously escape major injury – really just bumps and bruises. Awash with national media reports and first-hand interviews with passengers, now all safe, warm and dry, their rescuers and safety experts describe the ordeal. NBC dubbed the accident the “Miracle on the Hudson”.

stop now Think of your values as if you wanted to list and describe them. What are your core values? If you’re like most people and organizations, your list of values shows integrity. But what does this word mean, ‘integrity’ (perhaps the ultimate quality)? What does that mean to you? How does your value of integrity show up for others every day? How have you developed your integrity? How can you further develop this quality? Why does it matter?

For most of us, integrity means something like “doing what you say” or “how you act when no one is looking.” These are good tests of integrity, but don’t really explain how one developed integrity. Structural integrity for a building is defined as “the uncompromised ability to safely resist the required loads”. A person’s structural integrity can be defined as “the uncompromised ability to properly resist challenges to virtue.” How can we develop this steadfast adherence to a strict moral code, this ‘voice’ response to difficult situations?

Like most things we do well, integrity comes from practice. In fact, it is appropriate to refer to the quality of integrity as a human value. Practice Integrity. A person speaks and acts with integrity outside of practice. Honesty is the result of preparation and choice, when one has lived long enough to recognize one’s own innate capacity to act on one’s own desires, whims, or selfishness. Integrity comes from training and increases with the quality, length and adherence to that training. Integrity follows concrete neural pathways developed over time, which stimulate certain attitudes and habits, which seemingly automatically produce appropriate actions. But these actions are not. based on animal instincts; Right actions result from human desire and practice.

My favorite values-based definition of leadership is “authentic self-expression that adds value through relationships.” This includes relationships between both people and events. When self-expression begins to consistently add value over time, through every human encounter, through every decision, and through every split-second reaction to events, you have integrity.

Strive for integrity: practice discerning what is right, practice saying what you will do right, how and why you will do it right, and do it whether anyone else is paying attention.

You can bet there are at least 154 people in this world who are grateful for the value Chesley Sullenberger added through their brief relationship. What does “Sully” Sullenberger and Flight 1549 have to do with integrity? Sullenberger is a graduate of the US Air Force Academy and flew F-4 fighter jets while in the Air Force in the 1970s. He started flying commercial jets in the 1980s. “He’s executing that plane with the precision it’s built for,” says the wife of her hero-husband. In addition to working for US Airways, he runs a safety consulting firm that focuses on the psychology of keeping airline crews functioning during a crisis. He is an investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board. I understand that he is also certified to fly a glider – a skill that surely helped him land an Airbus A320 with both engines on fire, in a controlled manner over a nearly frozen river rather than in the middle of the neighborhood of one of the world’s most densely populated cities.

Instinct didn’t take over for Sullenberger as he steered his jet toward those icy Hudson waters, practicing—practicing integrity. This is a man who decided early in life that safety and human life were so important to him that he would dedicate himself to preserving those ends. He trained, he studied, he learned day by day, memorizing those things for years. What once began as a pilot’s first flight has become an unconscious ability over 40 years of practice – the right attitudes, habits, judgments, actions and behaviors to save lives in a crisis.

Reflection to inspire personal growth in integrity (with your learning partner)

How would your life be different if you practiced with more intention and consistent integrity? What can you do every day to increase your integrity? What is your personal code of conduct; What should you change to display them more fully? Find an accountability partner or hire a coach to help you practice integrity and do these actions:

  • Integrity is the glue that binds your other virtues. What are your other core values? why this
  • How do these values, together, define who you are, how you think and act, and how you are perceived by others?
  • What words and behaviors do other people say about you every day that demonstrate your values?
  • Are you willing to practice day in and day out, year after year, to be ready for an opportunity that will put your integrity to the ultimate test?
  • What specific attitudes, habits, and behaviors do you need to practice consistently in order to become the person of integrity you aspire to be?
  • Describe an experience or event when you were your personal best and demonstrated integrity.
  • Describe a current situation in your life that, in your heart, you can apply the same level of integrity as in your example above.
  • Plan to touch base with your learning partner next month about how each of you is practicing integration. Hold each other accountable.
