Weekly Review: Akame Ga Kill!
Akame ga Kill is another anime show that I, honestly, had no idea existed. Well, I did. Every time I would look for a new anime to watch, my brother would scream at me to watch it, “Have I ever done you wrong?!” Eventually, I caved; And so, my adventure into the world of Akame ga Kill began. I wasn’t expecting much, in fact, I didn’t even know what it was. All I knew was that it was going to have some great action scenes.
Why don’t I take you to the first episode? In the beginning we see a couple of travelers attacked by a demon, saved by a young man named Tatsumi. Now, based on how easily he dispatched the monster, we assume that Tatsumi is pretty strong. He is on his way to the capital to join the army to send money back to his poor village. Actually, he was traveling with two friends, but they got separated, so he hopes to meet them again in the village. At this point the passengers he saves warn him about the people there, but he takes it with a grain of salt.
On his first day in the capital, Tatsumi is rejected from the army and all his money is stolen. When a nice young woman takes him in and allows him to live with her wealthy family. Tatsumi is finally convinced that he has found a group of descendants in the capital; Then, the Night Raid attacks. Tatsumi manages to capture the young girl and the guard outside the barn on their property, this is after the girl’s mother and father have already been killed. It was here that Night Raid caught up with the group; Thinking he is doing the right thing, Tatsumi tries to defend the girl.
Within two seconds, you will know that these Night Red guys are on a different level than Tatsumi. Then comes the real shocker. Since he is not their target, Night Raid decides to show Tatsumi why they are killing this family. They open the barn door to reveal the slaughterhouse. One of Tatsumi’s friends, hanging in the middle, dies of torture. In the corner, inside the cage, is his other friend, obviously tortured, who soon dies at the sight of Tatsumi. Tatsumi cuts the young woman himself after witnessing his friends being brutally tortured. It was then that Night Raid decided he should join them and practically kidnapped him.
Now I don’t know about you, but that alone took a full eighty from where I thought the story was going. I almost couldn’t believe it had happened. Stories range from funny and light-hearted to holy crap about people being tortured and dead. This is that kind of show. You think it’s all fun and games and then, bam, something unexpected happens that brings you to tears.
This show is so unique, I think the only other show like it is Attack on Titan. Now before you say they have nothing to do with each other, let me say, they do. Plot armor. You know, the mysterious thing that keeps the main characters alive? Yeah, none of these shows have that. Akame Ga Kill has less plot armor than Attack on Titan. That means even the main character(s) are/are not safe. So, whenever a fight breaks out, it’s pretty busy. The anime explains that whenever two Imperial Arms users fight, one must die. So every time you’re thinking, oh my god, is my favorite character going to die?!
That being said, there are still some comedic moments. Like the whole love thing between Tatsumi and Esdeath. In case you didn’t know, Esdeath is a bad ass who falls in love with Tatsumi, of course she’s also Night Raid’s mortal enemy. Even in shows like Akame Ga Kill, they have time for a brief swimsuit episode. By now, I think it’s almost mandatory in every anime show.
What makes Akame ga Kill truly special, however, is the moral gray line the show has. Enemy forces don’t really feel like enemies. In fact, the show goes out of its way to show you that they’re human too. So when it comes to the fight between the “good” and “bad” guys, you’re almost torn on who you want to win. I was honestly saddened by almost every death on this show, other than cannon fodder, stuff we don’t care about.
The only downside to this show is towards the end. They make a surprising last rush, throwing themselves into death like frag grenades to get almost to the end. For example, Tatsumi’s death in the anime felt a little… forced. Needless to say, my death felt a little strange too. In any sense, the last one kind of affected things, but it was still good. The final match between Esdeath and Akame was a truly awesome battle for the ultimate title.
Overall, it’s a good show. It breaks away from the ideal that there are good people and bad people. It also proves that anyone, and I mean anyone, can die at any time. It’s like an anime with a bit of reality. Pretty cool, if you ask me.
