Quitting Smoking Easily With Hypnosis Therapy
Hypnotherapy is the treatment of choice for smokers to quit this dangerous and destructive habit. But not all hypnotherapists are trained in the latest and most effective techniques for easy recovery from this stubborn addiction. So in this article I have listed seven of the most advanced methods currently in use by hypnotherapists.
The first of these is the addictive personality technique. This technique, which I developed in 1983, is based on the assumption that all addictive behavior is the result of a subconscious attempt to heal some form of deep physical or emotional pain. Although the conscious mind does not know the nature of this pain or its source, the subconscious mind is fully aware of the source of this pain and can easily access this information in a trance state. Using hypnosis we can develop a specific inner meditation that treats the source of this inner pain. A hypnotic suggestion is then used to train the client to enter this therapeutic meditation every time the client desires this addictive behavior.
Much smoking behavior is learned during the preteen and teenage years. During this period of identity crisis, many teenagers find cigarettes an opportunity to feel big, in control, and “cool” in front of their peers. Many teenagers use smoking as a way to challenge their parents’ right to be “independent”. Even after a smoker reaches adulthood, the inner teenager can still drive us to smoke if these feelings are not resolved. Many of my clients are surprised to discover the power these adolescent urges hold in their subconscious minds. I have found that the feelings and needs of the inner teenager are easily accessible in hypnosis and can be easily manipulated. I use induction to get back to the teenager learning to smoke first. Then I asked the teenager, “What is smoking going to do for you?” Maybe he’ll say “I want to be a real man!” Then we use rescue campaign methods so that the client’s adult convinces the teenager that they are a real person and a good and decent person, no matter what mom says or what dad does.
Then I use direct hypnotic suggestions to change teenagers’ attitudes towards smoking. Here’s how I enlisted a teenager to say no to cigarettes. I encourage teenagers to understand that they have been duped by the lies of wealthy tobacco companies and wealthy Madison Avenue advertising executives. They promised romance and excitement. They cause disease and death. He promised manhood. They gave impotence and addiction relief. They convinced millions of Americans to slowly kill themselves with these lies knowing full well the ill effects of their toxic product. I suggest that every time a teenager craves a cigarette, they make a fist with one hand and vow to never give another dime to those evil giants. “Because I’m a real man!” This style of instruction is particularly effective with teenagers, whose anti-establishment attitudes are well documented.
Another powerful method is the future smoker’s journey. Subjects in trance travel 10 to 30 years ahead to their future self who is still smoking. Both client and therapist may experience this future self with pale skin, slouched posture, shortness of breath, coughing, etc. Then we listen to this person’s message. “Stop smoking now!” Then the subject promises to their future self, out loud if possible, that they are quitting now and explains why. Then we watch with joy as the future self transforms. Their cheeks turn pink, their skin clears, their breathing suddenly becomes easier. Then your future self will thank you for your help. In trance, this technique is very powerful.
A similar technique I use from my NLP training is called “say goodbye to your old friend’s cigarette”. This process may seem silly to many. After all, how is such a toxic habit “friend”? But every true addict knows that in times of trouble you sometimes hold on to that cigarette like a child holds on to its mother’s hand. As a former smoker myself, I remember sometimes having the strange feeling that cigarettes were my best friend. At least it was always there. Saying goodbye to such an old friend can be painful. So we lead the client through a loud gentle conversation with this old friend. We remember and acknowledge the good times. We review all the painful times when cigarettes were…and maybe no one else was. Then we explain to our old friend why we can no longer be friends. “Honestly, you’re killing me,” we say with genuine sadness.
Then I have the client listen to the cigarette’s response. Most of the time the cigarette has nothing to say. This silence sometimes surprises or hurts the customer. But I remind them of that old Bob Dylan lyric: “You never talk too much.” The familiar silence of their old friend often gives the client a strong incentive to leave. “Yeah, damn, you never talked to me!” I complete this ritual by helping the client connect with a new friend. This new friend can be a spirit guide, an inner mother, a guardian angel, or even a dear outer friend who can be called upon when the client needs some unconditional love. It may take time for a client to learn to invoke such a friendship, but such a friend is a better friend to you than a cigarette, a health builder rather than a health destroyer. And this new friend will talk to you and you can learn to listen to their wisdom and guidance. This, of course, is the essence of alchemical hypnotherapy.
Quitting cigarettes is difficult because most smokers crave cigarettes when their bodies need oxygen. Because most smokers only take deep breaths while inhaling the cigarette. And rapid inhalation through the mouth is particularly effective in delivering oxygen to the body. Many smokers experience a sense of energy and relaxation and mental clarity when they first inhale smoke, not realizing the effects of oxygen entering their bodies. Test it now. Take several deep breaths while breathing through your mouth. Release each breath slowly and deliberately, as if you were smoking a cigarette. Notice how you feel now. Most subjects increase energy, feelings of calm and relaxation, and mental acuity. Well, cigarettes didn’t do that, oxygen did.
Thus, I encourage all of my quit smoking clients to inhale this way every time they crave a cigarette. Sometimes it causes coughing. I tell them this is good, because it shows that your lungs are starting to clear themselves. Cough but keep breathing. This extra breath not only helps control cravings, but also helps the lungs open wider and heal more quickly. An important addition here is to have my clients drink a glass of water each time they complete this breath. This allows the client to do something different with their hands and mouth. And water helps cleanse the blood of nicotine and other toxins that cause these cravings. It also helps to cleanse the lungs. Since most smokers suffer from chronic dehydration due to their habit, water is an important medicine for their body’s recovery. I will not work with any smokers unless they agree to this simple behavior. And I reinforce these activities with hypnotic suggestions to make them even more engaging.
Relapse is a terrifying concept for anyone recovering from addiction. And this is a serious problem, which affects almost every addict. A smoker feels that just one cigarette in a weak moment is proof of complete failure. So in desperation they buy another pack. There is a different way to experience relapse. It goes like this: “And if, by some accident, you find yourself smoking a cigarette, … you notice that it tastes ugly and bad, because you are a non-smoker. Because it tastes bad, you throw it away immediately and Wash. Your mouth spits out fresh clean water because you are now a non-smoker.” From this and a collection of similar phrases you learn that smoking another cigarette proves by its bitter taste that you are a non-smoker. And it works because… well let’s face it, cigarettes taste bad in an ex-smoker’s mouth. Do you remember how long it took you to like those things as a teenager?
The most addictive thing about cigarettes is taking out or rolling a cigarette, lighting it and holding it. Remember the luxury of watching the smoke waft, perhaps learning to blow smoke rings? I call all these pleasurable sensations “orodigital experiences”. This was one of my greatest pleasures when I smoked and I know I’m not alone. I discuss with my clients in very clear terms how we can help them discover new orodigital rituals that will give them the same experience of soothing relief. Options include: chewing gum, a carrot from a bag brought to work, or my personal favorite, chewing on a pen.
While some of these habits border on the weird, I happily point out that none of them are as weird as poisoning yourself and everyone around you with dangerous chemicals! If you’re ready to quit smoking, think about what you can do with your hands and mouth that feels good and isn’t too awkward to do in public. It’s much easier to find a new orodigital ritual than to quit your current one cold turkey, which may lead to anxiety, bingeing, overeating (a comfort ritual most of us don’t need), or resuming smoking. Hypnotic advice can be used to enhance the enjoyment of this new ritual, which once provided helps us achieve greater relief than smoking. This is not particularly difficult, as nicotine is actually an anxiety-inducing drug when consumed without the comforting rituals we are so familiar with.
