Skate Photography Interview With Bart Jones
Name, age, status, employer, hometown? Bartholomew Wilhelm Jones, 28, single, The Skateboard Mag Boy!, Geneva, Illinois.
Let’s start at the very beginning. I want to know what it took to give birth to you. Tell me about your parents. What kind of people were they, what did they do, how did you get pregnant?
Wow!! It is deep. i don’t know I think my dad was originally from Plainfield, Illinois a little cornfield town that is now big. He went to a private Catholic school or something, but he’s not religious or anything, he keeps it real. And my mother is originally from Germany and she lived in Israel for a minute when she was young, but then I think times were very hard there, so her family traveled by boat to the States and lived in St. . Louis, I think maybe.. Moving on, Dad went to college in St. Louis, met my mom, badda boom butta bing, got married and married me.. I wonder if he was on some kind of drugs at the time, because I Very jacked up. My mom had a lot of odd jobs, from being a school teacher, to running an antique store, to working in real estate, and my dad used to run a chain of record stores called Apple Tree Records, it was a great time because until I was 16, my dad would add any music for free. could, as well as free tickets to anything, I think they would have kept it going’ but for the likes of Best Buy, a circuit city, places like; The apple went under the tree. I went around with my family to close all the shops, which were absorbed, but I got a lot of goods. Now my dad runs Play It Again Sports, so my mom and dad go to garage auctions and stock up on used sports equipment, so we keep a lot of music around the house, but now it’s sports equipment.
Let’s go back to your childhood. Any traumatic event that still haunts you today?
I don’t think anything from my childhood still haunts me, but yeah sure.. I have a lot of them.. I almost blew our family’s new puppy’s head off with a dreno bomb, my baby sitter tried to have sex with me once, I don’t know , but yes I was definitely a confused kid, still very much am.
What was your first foray into skateboarding? When did you know it was going to be a long-term relationship?
I may not remember the first meeting, but I do know that I had a blast when I saw these friends skating on the flatground and jumping over the street obstacles at this downtown festival called “Swedish Days.” All the dudes had on two different colored airwalk shoes with duct tape, painter hats, all flared up, I remember thinking “these dudes are badass, I want to be like that!” I was always psyched if I could catch “Skate TV” on Nickelodeon at the same time. Clearly completely ignorant of skateboarding, but super hyped nonetheless. I didn’t start skating until a few years after that, when a skate shop called Rich’s opened near my house, which is funny to think, because the place was such a ‘circus’, but I just skated around the shop. It was the worst thing for me at that time.
Funnily enough, one of those friends I saw skating at the festival a long time ago is now my good mate Steve Davenport, he still skates, still rips!! But yeah, I never really knew it was going to be a long-term relationship.. I guess I never really got stuck into anything. I’m all over the gunbat panzy steez when it comes to relatively anything else. I remember when some kids in high school were into golf, cars, etc. Was getting into other things like… I don’t really understand. All I want is “You don’t want to go skating?!” I went through a little phase when I was going to art school, where I wasn’t really into skating, I didn’t really know what was going on, didn’t see magazines and new videos; At the time I was more interested in being a “great artist” but I’m kinder to what I think.
Being from Illinois, what are your thoughts on Barack Obama?
Being completely fried, I don’t really pay much attention to that sort of thing, but I’m definitely down for Obama. I remember when he was running for senator or whatever in Illinois, he had all these billboards with him, and I said to my dad, “This guy looks all pimp,” and he told me, “That’s the guy to expect. The first black President” Then in my photojournalism class I was assigned to photograph Barack’s victory speech. Like other suckers, I was just eating it; Obama just talks like.. I don’t even know! Power, I think, and all the people were so happy just looking around, it was just a good atmosphere all around. And now it’s the same thing again, but the whole country. I’m pretty sure I once lived in the same town as Obama. Very exciting times, but what do I know..?
