My Experience With Hairy Cell Leukemia
I don’t mind admitting that I was shocked to be told I had Leukemia and was in tears in the counsellor’s office.
For me and my family, getting the treatment I needed to fight this blood cancer was the most important thing. I had not been well for about eighteen months before the diagnosis, feeling very tired and unfit.
During a lovely holiday in Bermuda, I started feeling like I had the flu and when I got home to England I had to see my doctor because by then I couldn’t breathe properly. I actually had Legionnaires’ disease – which simply means I had pneumonia, childhood TB showed up on my x-rays and I was very sick for 6 weeks. I was taking 8 different antibiotics daily to fight it.
Interestingly, my husband was fine – no symptoms – I now know that my white blood cells have already been linked to cancer and this has weakened my immune system.
It was a year after getting legionnaires that I knew something was wrong because I found that I had to go to bed in the afternoon because of exhaustion – all I had to do was knock lightly and I had a big black bruise.
After visiting my doctor again, who referred me to a local hospital, where tests were done which included blood tests and a bone marrow sample taken from my hip bone – I have to say it was not a pleasant experience, the diagnosis was made. I had hairy cell leukemia, so called because the tumors looked covered in tiny hairs under the microscope.
Chemotherapy was simple – basically the chemicals needed to kill the cancer cells are injected into you intravenously – I was given a liquid injection before the chemo, this was to stop me from getting sick – thank god it worked. I was also lucky that my hair didn’t come out in clumps – I had severe dandruff but that was all.
I had to have 5 two hour chemo sessions Monday through Friday and by the last session I felt so weak, I was given some needles to inject myself with what the doctor described as a fertilizer for white cells. I did the injections and found that I was having a lot of discomfort in the hip and thigh bones – this was due to the injections because the solution was stimulating my bone marrow and helping to grow clean new white cells (sorry I can’t explain it. More in medical terms). And that’s what caused the discomfort. It was a small price to pay to make my blood pure again.
I am very lucky, my type of leukemia is treatable and as long as infections are avoided after and during chemo, a full recovery is completely achievable after 6 months.
I have been in remission for three years now, see my consultant every six months and he says my blood is very healthy, so I thank God for that and of course the medical profession who are just fantastic.
