Spotlight: Spotify

This article focuses on Spotify. Now you might be wondering. What does Spotify have to do with data? Actually, not that much, but I wanted to take the time to highlight some of the great things Spotify is doing in the world of data, and also some things that are completely off the data path.

Search weekly

(4.5/5)

Discover Weekly is a new Spotify feature that rolls out in full over the summer. Every Monday, the playlist updates and brings you 30 songs you’ve probably never heard of. It takes the data it stores on you and comes up with songs it thinks you’ll like. Sounds good right? yes It’s great, but after using this feature for a few months now there are some glitches in their system.

negative

1. Discover Weekly is based on your all time plays. So if you decide you want to listen to a genre you haven’t listened to all week, it won’t show up in your Discover Weekly. It is not necessarily a plus or minus. For me, I’ll get music suggestions based on the music I’ve listened to most recently.

2. There is a supreme lack of visibility into their processes. They don’t want someone else to copy how it works. I’d be really interested in reverse engineering their algorithm, but that would involve keeping track of everything I listen to for a week (impossible), and I’d suddenly have to be a software engineer (which I’m not), plus never know how Spotify promotional activity affects this playlist. Will not release.

3. The refresh time of the playlist seems to be really arbitrary and I’m not sure what’s causing it. I refresh my playlist at 2am on Monday and I refresh at 10pm on Monday. For those of us who are highly habitual, the inconsistency is annoying. Update: I noticed that when you restart the client it refreshes. It would be nice if they had a push setting to warn the user that they need to restart the client to retrieve it.

4. Sometimes things show up that you don’t like, and it’s almost infuriating when it does. There is no way to determine this on their end, but it would be nice if I was given the ability to get out of some bands. For example, I featured Upon A Burning Body on my playlist, which I’ve listened to before. Well, I had a big falling out with that band after they did some stunts on their new album. I’ve lost all respect for the band and want nothing to do with listening to them.

5. Sometimes songs that are already on one of your playlists appear. In the 10 weeks I’ve been using this playlist, I’ve only had this happen once. But still there is disappointment.

Those are the negatives, but let’s talk more about the positives and why it makes for a great listening experience for a user like me.

Positive

1. Rediscover the music you’ve forgotten. Yes, I listen to a lot of music. I’ve been known to play a song nonstop for days, then never listen to it again because I forgot to add it to a playlist or I’m having trouble finding the right playlist to put it on. Almost every week I rediscover one of those songs and it’s exciting to hear something you love again.

2. Listening to other songs by an artist you originally thought you only liked a few songs. This is one of my favorite things about the playlist so far. Sometimes I listen to a band’s song, only to hear 5 other songs and absolutely hate them so I leave the band. Then the band shows up in my DW, I mumble and the song is amazing.

3. Discovering a band you don’t listen to or follow very well drops a new album and it’s amazing. Released a new album 3 months ago and you didn’t know about it. But Spotify is to the rescue!

Spotify Radio (1/5)

Spotify’s radio offering isn’t great. Plain and simple. Pandora is an archaic service in my opinion, but they have mastered the art of radio better than Spotify. If there’s one thing Spotify can afford to fix more than anything else, it’s their radio. It’s annoying to make a playlist of about 50 songs, want to edit it, start playlist radio and hear a bunch of songs that aren’t in that playlist, but repeat the songs when you spam the next song button.

Spotify radio has been terrible for a long time. I want to believe it’s because radio pulls from promoted bands that play with other musicians than they pull from related bands. If so, that’s disappointing, but I understand that Spotify needs to generate revenue.

Spotify Premium (5/5)

Spotify Premium isn’t free, of course, but the extra (5 if you’re a student) you get for spending $10/month outweighs listening to ads and not being able to take your music with you on the go. Spotify premium essentially turned my phone into my full-time listening device, I switched to my iPod, and never looked back. If we do a cost analysis, we see that the $120 per year, versus the $200 one-time cost of the iPod is much better. Not only do I have one less device to remember when I’m traveling (oh, how frustrating it is to forget your iPod while traveling), but I also don’t have to worry about downloading and purchasing music and managing files. structure on my computer’s hard drive.

If you’re not paying for Spotify Premium, do you really use Spotify?
