For his small event planning company, Tim had 3 computers on a small network. Each employee had his own computer. Tim had set up his network to back up data to tape drives for each computer. About 2 years later, the hard drive failed and the company needed a backup tape for QuickBooks. Since Tim was not computer literate, he looked in the phone book for a computer professional. From the phone book, he calls a big name computer support company. Don, an IT professional, arrived in a small company car around 4:30 that afternoon. He immediately sat down at a computer to check the network.
After 30 minutes, Don said his shift was over and another person would be there soon. Twenty minutes later, Susie arrives in another small company car and determines that the tape drive is faulty. Susie went to the main office with the company’s tapes and tape drives. Tim hoped for the best.
Two days later, Susie calls Tim and says that some of the data has finally been restored and will be delivered to Tim’s office the next morning. The restored data contained only a portion of the QuickBooks information, and Tim’s staff had to find the rest if possible. The total bill for this IT company was over $1,800, and Tim spent several weeks doing data entry. The anxiety and tension in the office these weeks was terrible. Moral: Find an IT company to work with you regularly to keep all your equipment running at peak performance.
