Study Success – The Study Timetable Trap – Part 1
A study schedule is probably the first thing that a student will mean when they sit down to tackle their studies. This is true, one of the first things that those who teach study skills will recommend. I’ve seen it many times – and done it myself; You spend hours dividing your time evenly, creating the table with artistic flair, making sure all subjects get their fair share. Two days later, you’re doing a new job! Yes, time management is a very important aspect of your studies, but there are some risks and disadvantages to this approach to studying!
- This is the hidden form of procrastination: Although time spent organizing yourself is very important, oftentimes structuring a schedule is a way to postpone studying! You run the risk of this if you find yourself spending hours making your schedule neat and tidy, or if you often start new schedules after you deviate from your original course. If you’re going to make one, make sure it’s rough and done quickly. And start studying immediately.
- Emphasis is on time spent, not work done. You have forty minutes for math; You keep checking your watch, hoping the time will come soon and “Woo hoo, study’s over!” You can honestly hold your hands up and say that you ‘tried’ or that you ‘worked hard’ when those results don’t come. And no one can understand how you didn’t do well. (Parents are often confused by hours spent in the bedroom without keeping up with school progress!)
- No focus on what needs to be covered. Timetables mean that you keep following your routine without checking whether you are covering enough. You may find that despite all your time, the end of the year comes and you haven’t done all your work!
- Schedules are security blankets. They make you look like you’re studying, make you feel good, but ignore the actual progress you’re making.
Does any of this sound familiar? I know from my own experience and from the knowing smiles I get from my students when I mention these pitfalls that many students fall into the schedule trap! So what do we do about it? Throw out the schedule? Not at all. A good study schedule requires time management. But that shouldn’t be your first step, especially if time is short, and when it comes to studying, let’s face it!
