Fortnite "Application Could Not Start Correctly" (0xc000009a)

A 0xc000009a error (otherwise known as an “entry point” error), indicates that the application cannot load a required DLL.

It is typical that DLLs from DirectX or graphics packages are not available for games like Fortnite. These systems require them, which means that if they are unable to detect them, they will stop working – especially with the error you’re seeing.

To fix this, the simple solution is to get the DLL file on your system and make sure it is accessible.

Reasons

To understand why the error appears, you need to appreciate the role of DLL (Dynamic Link Library) files in Windows.

As operating system development progressed in the 90s, all parties introduced several methods to access “libraries” – third party software packages that allowed developers to use standardized code/functionality in their own applications.

Visual C++, DirectX,.NET and many other libraries became standard on Windows – with most applications – even today – relying on them.

The secret of these files is to deploy specific DLL files on your PC. These files can be reused by different applications, as long as they have the right functions, etc.

Unfortunately, if the files are missing, out of date, or corrupted, the error you’re experiencing will appear…

  • The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000009a)
  • Launching BattleEye service…
  • [INFO] File loading blocked…

The main problem here is that your application doesn’t have access to the DLLs it needs, although there are other concerns:

  • DLL files are not accessible

  • Antivirus may be blocking your application

  • Windows may have corrupted or damaged the DLL

  • Other programs may have overwritten the DLL

  • Your system may have a virus

The way to fix this is to make sure the DLLs exist on the system and then they are fully accessible.

The following steps will guide you through this process…

Solution

As with most problems with Windows, you need to go through the many possible causes of the problem and fix them one by one.

In case of error 0xc000009a, the following is recommended:

1. Uninstall BattlEye + Verify Fortnite

The first – and most effective – step is to remove the “BattleEye” application from your system.

BattlEye is the anti-cheat system that ships with Fortnite – Fortnite should work, but sometimes errors can occur:

  • Press the “Windows” + “E” keys on your keyboard

  • Browse to “C:/Program Files/Epic Games/Fortnite/FortniteGame/Binaries/BattleEye”

  • Click on “Uninstall_BattlEye.bat”.

  • Run the CMD file

  • Exit and load Epic Games Launcher

  • Under the “Fortnite” tab, click the “Cog” icon next to the “Launch” button

  • Select “Verify”.

  • Let the process continue

After this is done, it is appropriate to restart your system.

If that doesn’t fix the problem, it means there’s a problem with one of the third-party libraries on your system.

2. Reinstall VC++

The next step is to reinstall VC++.

As mentioned, Visual C++ was Microsoft’s way of standardizing many key features for software, and it has become a core part of the Windows ecosystem.

To make sure this isn’t a problem (which is highly likely), you’ll need to re-install any Visual C++ packages on your system:

  • In Windows 7, click “Start,” then “Control Panel,” and then “Programs and Features.”

  • In Windows, right-click the “Start” button, select “Apps and Features.”

  • From the list, scroll down to “Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable”.

  • Maybe a long list of many different packages

  • Make a list of each year + architecture (x64/x86) on a piece of note paper

  • Uninstall each

  • Now, browse on your favorite search engine

  • Search for “Visual C++ Redistributable Download”.

  • Click on the first link (should be Microsoft)

  • For each package you previously had, download a new one from this site

  • After this, install each of them

  • Restart your PC

  • Try your game again

While this may actually work, it may not be the solution for some…

3. Update DirectX / Graphics Drivers

Next you’ll want to look into updating DirectX and (probably) your graphics driver.

DirectX is the graphics library that Windows uses to process 3D imagery. Almost every game on the platform uses it.

While you can’t “reinstall” the DirectX engine, you can *repair* it and make sure your graphics driver is working properly…

  • Search online for “DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer”.

  • Click the first Microsoft link that appears

  • Click the orange “Download” button

  • Follow the steps and save the file on your PC

  • Open the file and let it run

  • Let it repair the current DirectX installation

  • Restart your PC

After doing this, you can reinstall your graphics driver:

  • Go online and search for “DDU” (Display Driver Uninstaller).

  • Download the file you found from Guru3D

  • Restart your PC in “Safe Mode” (instructions below)

  • Once in safe mode, run DDU and let it extract your GFX driver

  • Restart your PC in “Normal” mode

  • Let Windows download the latest driver for your graphics card

To enter Safe Mode, it depends on which version of Windows you’re using (Windows 10 made it harder to enter for a few reasons):

  • In Windows 7, restart your PC as usual

  • Press F8 continuously before Windows loads

  • Select “Safe Mode” with the appropriate number on your keyboard

  • In Windows 10, click the “Start” button

  • Select the “Power” button (left charm menu)

  • While holding SHIFT, press the “Restart” button

  • This will bring up the blue “Windows Recovery Environment” screen

  • Click “Troubleshoot” > “Advanced Options” > “Startup Settings” > “Restart”.

4. Download the file manually

This will only work if you have a direct idea of which file is missing / inaccessible.

If you don’t have this, you might be better looking at something called “Dependency Walker” – a free application that lets you determine which files are required by different pieces of software…

  • Click on your preferred search engine

  • Search for “DependencyWalker”.

  • Click on the first link and download the application

  • Run it

  • From the top menu, select the “Open” (folder) icon

  • Browse to the executable file causing the problem and select it

  • The system should highlight which files are required in the left menu

  • If any of these files appear “red”, you need to make sure they are accessible

  • Some applications will bundle DLL files

  • If you look online for a DLL file name, you’ll quickly know which package it belongs to

  • If you find the package, see if you can install it (you might just need to get a newer version)

  • If the package does not appear, you may need to download a fresh copy of the DLL file

Once you have downloaded the new version of the DLL file, you need to place it in the C:/Windows/System32 folder.

After doing this, you should try the application to see if it will work now.

If not, it usually suggests a deeper problem with the OS.

5. Update Windows

This probably won’t do much – but may give the system some way to fix itself:

  • Windows 7
  • Click “Start” > “Control Panel” > “System and Security” > “Windows Update”

  • Click on “Check for Updates”.

  • Windows 10
  • Press the “Windows” + “I” keys on your keyboard

  • Select “Update and Security”.

  • Click on “Check for Updates”.

Once the update process is complete, restart your PC and see if the error is resolved.

If you still get the error after doing the above, it indicates that you have a more serious problem with Windows.

Unfortunately, one of the limitations of internet articles is that I can’t see exactly what your system is doing, and so I can’t offer any kind of specific advice. If you’re still at a loss, I’d highly recommend going to a larger question/answer community (Reddit/Super User/Microsoft Answers) to get a more specific set of responses.

If you need more help, you’ll want to talk to someone with hands-on access to your system – which usually means a local repair person to take a look at it, or maybe someone on Fiverr.
