Vocal Warm Up Exercises – Singing Tips and Tricks
We’ve all experienced that foggy sound when we get out of bed in the morning. This is especially so because our vocal cords are still cold when we are asleep. This song is also synonymous. If we fail to do proper vocal warm up exercises and start singing when our vocal chords are cold, we can do more harm than good to our vocal chords and sometimes with dire results.
Vocal warm up exercises can be grouped into several categories based on the results they produce as well as the organs they train. However, there is no specific regimen that you should follow and the exercises you do should be tailored to your exact situation. Exercise can be classified as follows:
Short sharp exhalations
This is a very effective voice warm up exercise and involves exhaling through the mouth which is not sustained for long. Visualize in your mind’s eye that you are in the library and someone is making a lot of noise. Imagine how loudly you would silence them. Shhhh! You want it to be as loud and audible as possible but in this case you want it to be short. So, it should be SHH! As you do this exercise, expel as much air as possible from your lungs in a very short amount of time. Repeat this until your lungs are free. Doing this will definitely make you pant, but it will help prepare your lungs for high-quality singing.
As a singer, proper breathing is essential. First, take a deep breath to relax the diaphragm. To breathe properly while singing, you need to use the lower part of the lungs as well as the diaphragm. A simple and effective exercise to achieve this is deep breathing. Take a deep breath, before exhaling your ribcage and back should stretch to a 5 count. Exhale each air in your lungs for 4 counts. Deep inhalation and exhalation are essential for your singing voice to be enjoyable.
Vocal strength exercises
This is another good vocal warm up exercise. First, hum to relax the vocal cords. Gently press your hands on your cheeks; Press your check until the inside touches your teeth. Then, press your lips together and start making a ‘brrr’ sound. Try to produce your sound even for 2 minutes. By doing this, you will feel the vibration on your lips, but there will be no vibration in your throat and mouth as they will relax.
This exercise helps to relax the larynx and reduce vocal tension. This not only makes your voice clearer when singing; It helps you sing easily. To do this, you simply expel air from your lungs through your lips. Your lips should be relaxed. Your lips will pucker and you’ll send air out and hum and it’ll make a BRBRBRBRB kind of sound.
These vocal warm up exercises are very effective when done properly and help warm up the various voice producing organs and muscles. Also, doing these exercises properly will help you achieve your dream of becoming a singer.
