Search and Destroy – The Battle For Search Engine Supremacy Between Microsoft and Google

Initially there were WebCrawler, AltaVista, Excite, Lycos and many others. As the algorithms driving them became more complex and the technology evolved, a Darwin-esque process began to kill those that didn’t adapt to the changing virtual environment. And then there were two.

Microsoft knows this role well. They are in a constant deathlock with Sony to see who will emerge victorious in the video game arena. Then there’s the never-ending battle of PC vs. Mac, fueled by Apple’s constant best-selling innovations (iPod, iPhone, iPad…you get the iDea). Microsoft has announced that Yahoo! In an effort to narrow the playing field against the competition.

Enter Google. With the release of their Google Chrome search engine and Android OS, a company from humble beginnings has become a technological juggernaut. Google took the breath out of its search and did so simply… well, at least to the naked eye. Google’s search relies on a series of complex formulas that no one but Google knows. Whatever it is, it works… because more people use Google Search than any other search engine.

We all know the story of Microsoft. Founded in 1975 by college dropout Bill Gates with friend Paul Allen, Microsoft was the world’s first computer language developer. The Redmond, Washington-based corporation has since become one of the largest and most influential companies in the world.

They also hold patents for Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office and Windows. 20 years after the founding of Microsoft, Bill Gates issued his “Internet Tidal Wave Memo” to the company and the rest was history. MSN (Microsoft Network) launched on August 24, 1995 to compete with AOL and dominated all but one competitor.

Google was started by two college friends, Larry Page and Sergey Brin PhD, in March 1996 as a research project for school. Google wasn’t always Google. It started with another name “BackRub”. Page and Brin decided to change the name the year after its conception to something a little catchier…Google. The word Google comes from googolplex, meaning 1 followed by 100 zeros. It was all part of the philosophy that Google founders wanted to convey to users. They were going to change the way we explored, and they weren’t going away anytime soon.

The first search engine created was neither Microsoft nor Google. Archie was created in the 1990s by a Montreal student named Alan Emtage. Archie, short for archive, was a database of filenames on the Internet that would match user searches. Later, two more search engines were created named Veronica and Jughead, both characters from the popular Archie comics.

The beginning of a new era

The World Wide Web was born in 1991 when Tim-Berners Lee decided to merge hypertext with DNS and FTP servers. The first website in the history of websites (http://info.cern.ch/) went online on August 6, 1991. Berners-Lee founded the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) in 1994 at MIT. By the end of the year, there were about 10 different search engines, including Excite, Lycos, Yahoo!, LookSmart, and WebCrawler.

Feeling lucky?

By the time Google entered the Net in 1996, it was one of the many portals people used to navigate a growing number of websites. Many people were confused by Google’s surprisingly simple page. It had the Google beta logo and a search box without an image, just a few links and two buttons: “Google Search” and “I’m Feeling Lucky”. Google’s home page has remained largely unchanged to date. Microsoft’s MSN Search was about a year ahead of them, but still not their biggest competition.

To make way for progress, Google had to defeat the little guys. They did this very effectively by indexing more web sites and returning more relevant results to user queries. In early 2004, their lack of frills and quick, concise answers accounted for 84.7% of all web searches on its homepage and partner sites. This led to Yahoo removing their name from Google’s list of partners and striking out on their own. Google dominates not by force, but through smarts. Google’s code of conduct is “Don’t Be Evil”.

If you buy the sites people go to, you can control the web.

YouTube is one of the most viewed sites on the Internet thanks to user-submitted clips and viral videos that span every topic imaginable. Google bought YouTube in 2006 for $1.65 billion. It wasn’t his only important power play. Google acquired Pyra Labs, maker of Blogger, in 2003, a small part of AOL in 2005, and most recently 3D desktop software maker ClickBump in 2010. This is just part of Google’s effort to stay on top.

Locked and loaded

By 2010 Microsoft had entered and Yahoo! And they changed the game with what they billed as the “first decision engine,” Bing. Bing takes a more visual approach to searching the web and has the comedic TV spots to prove it. All things considered, it is now quite obvious that Microsoft has set their sites on Google. $47.2 billion to stay at the table and see cards. Microsoft can do this. Bill Gates recently dropped as the second richest person in the world.

What does this mean for those of us innocent people just browsing the web for fun and work? For now, better, faster search results. As Microsoft and Google battle it out, both companies will have to try to offer better services to gain market share. If you don’t like either search engine, there are still others out there like Excite and AltaVista. They are not used as much anymore. As for the surrender of Google or Microsoft, they are too involved in the technology to happen anytime in the near future. Both sides have too much ammunition and too much fighting in their hearts. The battle lines have been drawn and now all we can do is watch the carnage unfold-
