How to Increase Breast Milk Supply When Pumping

It is common knowledge that “breast milk is best” and so many women try to breastfeed or at least breastfeed their babies. No breast pump is as good at stimulating and stimulating milk production as baby’s milking, so it’s an uphill battle if baby or mom can’t breastfeed directly. However, many women choose to exclusively pump their breast milk. I am one of those women and pumped for two of my children after breastfeeding failed.

When my first was born I was told by the NICU nurses to pump every 2-3 hours; When my milk came in, I had more milk than I knew what to do with. After that, I got lazy and decided to pump every 4 hours. Inevitably, my milk supply dwindled. When I got pregnant with my second it got even smaller (5 months after my first!); When the second one was born and he couldn’t latch on to my inverted nipples, I switched to pumping. My supply went up and down, and after figuring out how to keep my breast milk supply going, I could provide all the milk my growing baby needed (and it’s a big, growing baby!).

To make milk, you need liquid

Increasing your fluid intake will increase the amount of milk you produce, so drink plenty of water! Your liquid of choice doesn’t have to be water, but it is the healthiest liquid. If you’re like me and don’t like drinking water unless it’s flavored or cold, you can add sliced cucumber, frozen or crushed fresh berries, herbs like mint or parsley, or even a little fruit juice. Water is a little more interesting.

If you need your water to be fresh even if it is very cold, I would suggest investing in a filtered water pitcher. My husband bought a cheap Brita pitcher from Target that we keep in the fridge filled with water. It tastes clean and doesn’t even need ice because it’s already cold!

If you want more flavor in your water, try tea or diluted fruit juice. If it’s lunchtime, try the soup! Even a cup of plain broth counts!

Be careful though, not all liquids are good! If you are nursing, you should definitely limit your caffeine intake and avoid alcohol as much as possible! Alcohol can actually decrease your milk supply.

If you eat anything, make it oatmeal

I don’t know why, but oatmeal increases breast milk supply. I never liked oatmeal, unless it was snowing outside and all you wanted to do was lay under the warm sheets of your bed all day. Now I eat it every day, because it affects my supply. The best thing I like about it? It is easy to prepare and does not take much time to prepare.

However, it doesn’t have to be soft oatmeal every day. I often like to have a yogurt snack or dessert with granola…even better if you have fresh fruit! Oatmeal cookies can also help increase breast milk production.

If you pump, pump often

There is no way to deny it. If you are going to give your baby only pumped breast milk, you will need to pump more often. I do it every 3 hours during the day and then once in the middle of the night. For restful sleep, make sure you have at least 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep before pumping at night. When I was pumping for my first child, either the lactation consultant or the NICU nurse said that the best time to pump to increase breast milk production was 1-2 AM (I’m saying “something like that” because this was a 2 year old. ago!). I usually do my night pump at 3am.

Speaking of pumping, there is some technique involved in getting all the milk you can get. When pumping, they advise you to start with the highest amount of suction you can tolerate, and then once you get used to that level of suction, to steadily increase it.

Unless you’re using a hospital-grade breast pump, the suction you’ll get probably isn’t as good as even a double electric breast pump. I have C-cup breasts and holding pumping bottles to my chest is a chore; The highest level of suction feels the same as medium level suction, just slower. So when milk starts to slow down after double pumping both breasts, I unplug one suction tube and just use one pumping bottle. This allows me to focus the suction on one breast at a time and leaves me with one hand free to massage, poke and push any areas with milk to get the last drops out.

Increase your milk supply without worrying about an early grave

Now breathe a sigh of relief!

If you’re pumping breast milk, it may take some time to build up your supply, but don’t really worry. If you don’t have enough milk for your baby, don’t beat yourself up if you have to temporarily supplement with formula. If you really want to make this breast milk pumping thing work, try my tips and relax. Your milk supply will be restored in a few days! If you are pregnant again, of course!
