Beethoven – The Music Genius of All Time

“Beethoven extended the limits of the classical style beyond all previous conceptions, but he never changed or abandoned its essential structure, as did the composers who came after him. In other fundamental aspects of his musical language, as well as in a movement in key relationships, Beethoven may be said to have remained within the classical framework. “can, even when they use it in incredibly radical and original ways” says Charles Rosen in his classical survey ‘The Classical Style’.

Keeping this quote in mind, it gives us a clear view of the total genius of Beethoven who created timeless tunes and immortal symphonies, which are considered masterpieces in today’s world. To understand the authentic class of this maestro, it is necessary to look at his background of how he became an archivist of the classical and romantic eras.

Brief history

Ludwig van Beethoven of German descent was born on December 17, 1770 to Johann, an accomplished teacher of violin, piano and voice. Teaching music was his bread and butter, as he was a chapel master (kappelmeister). From his childhood, Beethoven sang soprano in the same Electoral Chapel where his father was the chapel master who taught Beethoven, violin and piano. From the age of 8, he studied with several local organists, even taking piano lessons from Tobias Friedrich Pfeiffer, where violinists such as Franz Roventini gave him violin and viola lessons. Although as a born artist, Beethoven’s musical talent was comparable to that of Mozart, he never passed the elementary level of schooling. As a teenager in 1787, he moved to Vienna for unknown reasons, but some say he met Mozart and took lessons from him. When he returned in two weeks, his world suddenly changed for him as his mother died and his father became an alcoholic. Beethoven, at the age of 19, requested to be formally recognized as head of the household and began receiving half of his father’s salary to support his siblings.

Beethoven moved to Vienna in 1792 and his father died the same year. His father died in December of the same year. He studied with Haydn for a limited time due to personality clashes. Beethoven then studied under the famous teacher Johann Georg Albrechtsberger in Vienna. With him he learned contrapuntal and counterpoint exercises in free writing, two- to four-part fugues, imitation, choral fugues, double fugue, double counterpoint at various intervals, canon and triple counterpoint. With this learning process he continued to compose more and more where in 1800, the First Symphony and Septet (Op. 20) were performed by him. At the age of 20, he became deaf and dumb and Beethoven’s entire life changed completely, although he tried to hide his weakness from the world but could not succeed. Beethoven used a special rod attached to the soundboard on the piano that he could gnaw on – the vibrations would then travel from the piano to his jaw, increasing the pitch of the sound. By 1814 he was completely deaf. After 1815, no successors emerged for patronage, and Beethoven depended largely on selling composition rights and a meager pension.

Innate genius

Now here comes the question: How did a great composer like Beethoven write symphonies 2, 3 (Symphony 3, titled Iroca Bonaparte, a tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte) and 4 in 1800-1806, which were the early days of his deafness? What can one say about his imaginary thoughts because they were given by God and no man can develop them by himself. If he was intelligent enough, he could have studied well in school life. But Ajramar was the chosen one, born to create such music. He had the talent to revolutionize the world of music.

Clearly standing the test of time, his symphonies are established as master pieces alongside his other works. Beethoven loved, but never married, a woman named Fanny. He said of her in a letter, “I have found the only one whom I will undoubtedly never have.” His true love of romance is evident in his sonatas. Beethoven completed a vast musical body of work throughout his life. Each piece represents its brilliance with its own style and structure variations and modulations. Although Beethoven’s music varied from symphonies to sonatas, his areas of expertise were piano concertos, string quartets, piano sonatas, and symphonies, which were also his favorites. Beethoven’s compositional career is generally divided into early (up to 1802), middle (1803–1814) and late (after 1815) periods. Some of his early classic pieces include the 1st and 2nd symphonies, the 1st-6th string quartets, the 1st-3rd piano concertos, and the first 20 piano sonatas, including the evergreen “Moonlight” sonata.

His middle (admirable) period began with his discovery of transcendental deafness. It is famous for broad bass music that conveys conflict and heroism, mid-period works include the Fourth and Fifth Piano Concertos, the Six Symphonies (Nos. 3–8), the Violin Concerto, the Triple Concerto, the next seven piano sonatas (including the Waldstein and Appcionata ), five string quartets (Nos. 7–11) and Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio.

The last period is considered as the romantic period. The music of this period is branded by its intellectual depth, formal innovation, and intense personal expression. For example, the Ninth Symphony, the Missa Solemnis, and the “Hammerclavier” Sonata are among the best works of the late period. After his death in , every composer around the world has been inspired by Beethoven’s music at some point and at some point in his musical career. The biggest example of this is that the European Committee, which designed the European flag, adopted Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ from his 9th Symphony in 1972, which became the official anthem of the European Union in 1985. The musician has also been portrayed by many. Both film, theatrical and television releases. Since his death in 1827, Beethoven’s music has had a profound influence on subsequent generations of musicians and will continue for centuries to come.
