Here I Am – Three Very Simple Words – But They Can Mean So Much When Sincerely Spoken
i am here Three simple words – “I am here” – and they mean – I am available – I am available to listen – I am available and ready to listen to what you have to say to me – and what you have to say to me.
When we utter these words, we don’t know where they will lead – or what the consequences will be – yes, even in 2021.
What do we do when we hear God’s voice—when we know it’s God speaking to me—doing something to capture my attention—to capture my life—and my talents and gifts?
What happens when I say to God, “Here I am”?
1 – I can make sacrifices that I never thought possible. That may not be the best start to a message – perhaps one should start with a blessing – but it is a blessing! Look again at Abraham – After a while God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “I’m here,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Burn him on one of the mountains that I will tell you.” Genesis 22 v. 1 and 2.
God does not test us to grade us – but to raise us – and develop us.
Matthew 10 Verse 39 – Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for me will find it. This is the principle of the cross. I give up something to get something much better. God gives it back in ways we can’t even imagine – but it starts with sacrifice.
Jacob abandons his plans – Joseph abandons his dreams – Moses abandons Pharaoh’s palace – David abandons his desire to build God’s temple – Matthew abandons his job as a tax collector – Peter abandons his net – Paul abandons his net Religion – Mary abandons her son. They all gave something – they all knew something about sacrifice – then, God gives something back.
We couldn’t miss the sacrifice part – no! We give up being in control and God takes control – and God does something.
Romans 12 verse 1 – I beseech you, brethren, in consideration of God’s mercy, to present your bodies as living sacrifices holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual worship.
2 – “Here I am” – means I face a fear I thought I could never face.
Jacob – he wrestled with God – his name means ‘planner’ – but later, God gives him a new name – Israel.
And God spoke to Israel in a night vision and said, “Jacob! Jacob!” “I’m here,” he replied. “I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go to Egypt, for there I will make you a great nation. I will go with you to Egypt, and I will surely bring you back.” Genesis 46 verses 2 to 4.
This was the one place he never wanted to go!
What is something I never want to do? Where is the one place I never want to go?
3 – “Here I am” – I see a miracle, I thought I would never see otherwise.
Moses – When the Lord saw that he had gone to look, God called to him from the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” “Don’t come any closer,” said God. “Take off your shoes, for the place where you stand is holy.” Exodus 3 verse 4
40 years in Pharaoh’s palace – 40 years tending sheep in the desert.
Moses asks 4 questions – Who am I? who are you What about them? How does it feel? This problem – weakness in me – struggle?
Remember and think about the miracles that Moses saw over the years.
4 – “I’m Here” – I’m hearing a message I never thought I’d hear.
1 Samuel 3 Verse 4 – Samuel – Then the Lord called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” When God speaks to you, it may seem to someone else instead of you – or it may seem to someone else.
God’s voice – God’s call – can disrupt your plans – and hopes – and ambitions.
5 – “I’m Here” – I go places I never thought I’d go.
Isaiah 6 Verse 8 – Isaiah has this vision – He hears this voice – Then I heard the voice of the Lord, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” So I said, “Here I am. Send me!”
We can say – “That’s a good question – I’m going to think about that question – I’ll give it some time. I’ll have someone consult me about it.”
God doesn’t do that – God doesn’t need to be consulted – He needs obedient servants.
6 – “Here I am” – I believe in a promise I never thought I could believe.
Luke 1 v35, 37 and 38 – Consider Mary.
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the Holy One who is born will be called the Son of God. For nothing is impossible with God.” “I am the servant of the Lord,” answered Mary. “Let it be for me as you say.”
This is the promise of the virgin birth – Mary is about 14 or 15 years old – she is married to Joseph. The words are slightly different from “I am here” – but the feeling is the same.
Some think they are too sinful, and therefore unworthy – others think they have failed or made too many mistakes or mistakes.
“I am a failure – I have always been a failure – I will never amount to anything – and will never amount to anything in my life.”
It is not true when we say “I am here” to God, when God calls.
7 – I serve someone I never thought I could serve.
Acts 9 verses 10 and 11 – Ananias There was a follower of Jesus in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord spoke to Ananias in a vision, “Ananias!”
Ananias answered, “Here I am, Lord.” The Lord said to him, “Get up and go straight down the road. Find the house of Judas and ask for a man named Saul from the city of Tarsus.”
At that time, Ananias did not know the end of the story – we do. Ananias joins Saul early in his Christian life. Ananias had to go and face Saul of Tarsus – and serve Saul of Tarsus. Saul was healed – and Saul was baptized – because Ananias went and ministered.
8 – I find joy that I never thought I would find – Jesus.
In fact it is Jesus who finds us – people may say at first that they have found God or that they have found Jesus – but after a while they realize that it is Jesus who has come to find us – and calls us. The resurrection is what it is – it is available to come to any life – through the Holy Spirit – in any church.
Revelation 3 verse 20 is all Jesus wants to get into the church – to get into His church! “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you, and you will eat with me.”
I am available – I am ready to listen – I am ready to serve – I am ready to trust – I am ready to go.
“Here I am” – ready to sacrifice – I have the strength and courage to face fear.
“Here I am” – ready to see a miracle – and hear a message I never thought I would hear – and go and do what I never thought I could go.
“Here I am” – willing to believe God’s promises – and serve someone I thought I would never serve – and enjoy the joy that is in Jesus Christ and all the other blessings of God.
January 2021 – “Here I am” – when God calls – when Jesus chooses – it is because there is a real need – and He wants you to be part of His plan and purpose.
