Segmented Bowl
People who love to make designs out of wood have created amazing art using this particular woodworking method. Some of the patterns are quite spectacular and your project could be too! Among the many masterpieces I’ve seen online, my all-time favorite is the sectional bowl. What I saw was really beautiful and the pattern on the bottom of the bowl gave it so much depth. One day soon, I plan to make one for my own home.
You can start by deciding the general size and shape of your project and the shape of your final work. You also need to consider the color and design pattern you want. Consider the wood species to use to contrast the different colors and finish.
The best and most economical way to make one of these bowls is to create a block of glued strips of wood of different thicknesses and colors. If you repeat the design on each side of the center, you will have a spiral design on each side of the bowl. The block should be 2.5 inches and 3 inches thick when finished. You will then cut the board from the block you just glued, you will need four boards and the thickness will vary. You will need to cut a ring from this board. Use a compass to draw the rings so they nest inside each other. Rings can be cut with a scroll saw or band saw; If you’re using a band saw, don’t glue the center of the block; You can tape the boards together to remove the rings. The rings can then be glued together.
From largest to smallest, each ring is slightly larger than the previous ring. It is important that the surface of the rings is smooth and sanded, any blemishes will show up greatly in your finished work. Since the rings overlap each other by one-half inch to three-quarters of an inch, it is important when gluing these rings together that the rings are centered and the stack is as vertical as possible. The side walls of the finished bowl will be 1/4 to 3/8 inch thin, if there is too much wiggle or the stack is not vertical you will cut off one side and waste a lot of work.
The stack of rings will not be perfect, but should be glued together as carefully as possible. Twisting the rings as they are glued will create a spiral design.
