How to Clean Diamond Rings at Home Safely

Little Secrets of Shiny Jewelry:

Looking at my diamond, the top looks bright and shiny but the sides get a little dirty. As with any expensive diamond ring of value, it comes with a warranty that includes regular cleaning services. So I used it once. I went straight to the diamond exchange, stood in line, took photos, asked for ID and a very long story to write here.

A diamond expert at a jewelry store told me a secret, you don’t need to run to the store to clean a ring that sparkles and shines—you can do it yourself at home.

Unlike silver, gold does not tarnish and tarnish over time. However, gold can still accumulate dirt in daily use. Here are some things you can do to restore the shine of precious diamond rings, bracelets, necklaces and other gold jewelry:

1-Cleaning jewelry with soap:

Add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to a bowl or cup of warm (not boiling) water and mix gently. Regular tap water will work, but for better results, you can use soda water. Do not use boiling water, especially if the jewelry has fractures such as precious stones and opal stones that can crack due to rapid and drastic temperature changes.

Soak the gold jewelry in the solution for about 15 minutes. While soaking, hot water and soap will find their way into cracks and crevices and remove dirt that is difficult to remove by hand.

Remove the jewelry and scrub gently with a toothbrush. Scrub each piece separately, paying special attention to hidden corners where dirt may be hiding. Use a very soft brush – the softer the better. Stiff bristles can scratch the surface of jewelry. If the jewelry is gold-plated (as opposed to pure gold), especially stiff bristles can remove even the gold layer completely. Special brushes designed for this purpose are best, but most soft, fluffy brushes (such as eyebrow brushes) will work as well.

Then, wash each piece with warm running water. Additional washing with running water will help remove dirt not caught on the brush. Again, make sure the water is not too hot. If washing jewelry in the sink, be sure to place something to block the drain. That way you won’t accidentally lose your jewelry if it slips out of your hand. Alternatively, you can wash the jewelry in a colander.

Finally, dry the jewelry with a soft cloth and place it in the open air to dry on a towel before wearing it again. If the jewelry is still wet, it will create a moisture trap for the skin, which can cause irritation.

2- Cleaning jewelry with toothpaste:

Mix a small amount of toothpaste with water (for every inch of toothpaste in a bowl or palm, mix a tablespoon or two of water to make a paste). Toothpaste is good for removing dirt from gold jewelry without scratching it. This cleaning method does not wear jewelry and therefore can be used for frequent, quick cleaning or when other cleaners are not available.

Gently scrub the toothpaste mixture with a soft bristle toothbrush. If there are scratches on the jewelry, it should be from the toothbrush, not the ointment. Use a soft brush if possible. Alternatively, you can simply brush with toothpaste without diluting it with water. But this method can be difficult to clean small cracks in jewelry.

Finally, wash the jewelry thoroughly to remove any accumulated dirt.

3- Use of boiling water:

As mentioned earlier, it is important to know when boiling water cleaning is appropriate. Pure gold can be boiled without any problem. However, boiling fragile gems (such as clarity-enhanced diamonds, opals, pearls, corals, and translucent stones) can crack and destroy them. Especially if the jewelry is at a cold temperature before boiling. Boiling is also not good for jewelry with gemstones attached, as it can release the glue. If the goal is to clean pure gold jewelry or gold jewelry with “harder” gemstones (like diamonds, not clarity-enhanced diamonds), cleaning with boiling water is a better option.

There is no need to boil a lot of water to “submerge” all the jewelry. You can boil it in a small pot over gas or other equipment that won’t be damaged by water (such as a cup, pyrex bowl, or metal). It is important to make sure that jewelry is not placed on top of each other because water can reach any jewelry. So make sure the tool is the right size.

Wait for the water to cool. When you can put your hands in the water, it’s time to remove the jewelry. Scrub each piece with a soft brush, then dry on a soft towel and leave to dry completely in the open air.

Don’t panic if the water looks dirty – it’s a good sign! When the dirt accumulated on the jewelry is removed by boiling water, it floats on the surface of the water. The appearance of dirty water, the promise of clean jewelry!
