Baby Whisperer – Tracy Hogg
Baby Whisperer is a nickname given to Tracey Hogg, a British nurse. Tracy made a name for herself as a baby ‘expert’ in the US state of California where she advised many Hollywood stars and cared for over 5,000 babies. Some of her famous clients were: Jamie Lee Curtis, Calista Flockhart and Jodie Foster. Her fee for 3 weeks as a maternity nurse was over $15,000.
Tracy was nicknamed by a Hollywood filmmaker after the movie ‘Horse Whisperer’ about a race trainer who can communicate with animals. Tracy was said to have a gift for interacting with babies and was noted to be able to calm fussy newborns and their anxious parents. Her message was respect for the individuality of the baby and she believed that constant interaction with the baby was important.
Tracy’s claim to fame was that she was able to get babies into a routine and get them to sleep through the night after just 3 weeks. Her approach is a simplistic one, and many critics have said that it was indeed common sense. She uses acronyms to describe her approach, such as sahaja (baby eats, activities and sleeps; Y stands for time for yourself). She didn’t like sleeping with your baby and was downright political on issues like breast versus formula. Although Tracy was a lactation consultant I found that some of the information and advice she gave about breastfeeding was incorrect.
Coming from a family of 9 children, Tracy had two daughters of her own. Tracy died of melanoma on November 25, 2004 in England. She was 44 years old.
