Tarot Reading – Which Questions Can You Ask and When?

In this article you will read about the types of questions you can ask for a tarot reading. Also addressed is when it is best to do a tarot reading.

Types of questions for a tarot reading

In principle, you can ask Tarot any ethical question as long as you are the subject of the question. But some types of questions do not have a clear and useful answer. You should know that tarot never gives a yes/no, good/bad, black/white… answer. Tarot describes the situation. It kind of tells a story. Nor does tarot make decisions for you. It does not tell us what to do. It is your responsibility to consider the advice the Tarot gives you. Another point to note is that tarot never gives inevitable results. During a tarot reading using a specific spread, the tarot gives the outcome of the situation. But this verdict is on the condition that nothing changes in the current situation. If you don’t like the results it is up to you to change the situation. In my experience these are the most frequently asked questions for tarot readings:

  • A question about the evolution of something You ask this question when you want to know the outcome of a particular situation. In general, the Tarot provides a clear and useful answer to this type of question. You’ll also often get clues as to where potential problems lie.
  • Questions that ask for a description of the situation When people want to know more about the background of a particular situation. This is usually for introspective questions.
  • Questions about personality Example: “I have problems communicating with other people. Can you tell me the background to these problems?”
  • Questions Asking Tarot Advice Example: “How can I change myself to give my relationship a fresh start?”

All of the above types of questions are useful for a good tarot reading. But often people also ask questions that are not so appropriate. These are questions that ask for a black/white answer from the Tarot. Or ask the tarot to decide for them. Here are some examples:

  • Yes/no questions Example: “Would I have a relationship with the guy I met last week?”
  • Questions that ask the Tarot to make a decision Example: “Where should I go on vacation: France or Spain?”
  • Question about time Example: “When will I get a new house?”. Tarot will not give a hard time on any subject. Tarot is about description.

Mary K. Greer describes the Yes/No spread in her wonderful book “Tarot for Yourself”. I never experimented. I think you’re missing out on a lot of Tarot possibilities with these types of questions anyway. But if I ever try it, this will be the spread I use. By the way, the effect of that diffusion can be neutral. Of course, people sometimes ask many kinds of double questions. For example: “Is my love relationship strong and how will it develop?”. It is a combination of the circumstances of a love relationship and the evolution of that relationship. The question should always be about yourself. Never ask something about someone else, such as: “How is the relationship between my boss and his wife?”. A tarot reading will never give you an answer to a question like this. And it is highly immoral. Tarot readings are also not suitable for purely “physical” questions. You shouldn’t expect the tarot to give you winning lotto numbers or tell you where the Inca’s treasure is hidden. That doesn’t mean you can’t ask about material things. If the object is relevant to you, you may get an answer from the tarot. For example “Where can I find a new house?” Would not be a good question. But “what does a new home mean to me” can be considered.

When to Ask for a Tarot Reading

The answer to this question is very simple: when you really need it. Don’t let anyone influence you. And certainly not by an unscrupulous tarot reader. Just listen to your inner voice. Another question is: “How long should I wait between two tarot readings?”. In this case, you can use the following tips:

  • First of all: listen to your inner voice. It overrules anything else.
  • Some spreads, which are used in tarot readings, give you a sort of intermediate result. When you reach that point, you can ask for a follow-up reading. But remember, if you change anything in the initial conditions, the effect will never be felt.
  • It’s not a good idea to ask for a new tarot reading, on the same topic, too quickly. You should give yourself time to deal with the first reading. Don’t rush. You are not a machine. I think you should wait at least 1 month, even 2 months between two tarot readings on the same topic.
