Music Lessons for Children – How Young is Too Young?
I started playing an instrument late – in the 4th grade, when I was 9 years old – when my public school offered classes. I chose the violin, and I loved it. My teachers recognized my talent, and supported my idea of becoming a professional. But when I got to the museum, I was pleasantly surprised! Most of the other students had started at a younger age, in kindergarten or school. I had to practice 5 to 7 hours a day to achieve those ‘virtuosos’.
Today, more and more research is confirming what I heard: There are neurological benefits to music training from childhood, when the brain is forming. Research also links childhood music education to higher grades, test scores, and self-esteem. And starting at a young age means that children have a better chance of becoming professional musicians, if that’s where their interests take them.
But not TOO young! Along with being a musician, I am a mother of three children (including two teenagers who are already musicians, and a 6 year old musician); and I am the director and teacher of a school that has taught music to hundreds of young people of different ages. This is what I have learned about introducing children to the world of music in a fun and successful way.
1. ENRICHING CHILDREN. Teaching an instrument to a child under the age of three is a frustrating task. Instead, bring them to hear live music. Give them simple toys, like a keyboard – kids love to press buttons. If you ever finish an instrument, dust it off and start playing again, in front of them.
2. THERE IS A MAGIC NUMBER. It’s about 3 ½. For many children, that’s when they can begin to focus on learning an instrument – especially if that instrument is the piano.
3. CAN YOUR CHILD SLEEP WHEN HAPPY? If the child can concentrate on a task such as a picture or drawing for 20 minutes, then the child is ready. (If they don’t stay quiet for more than 20 seconds, don’t give up – they’ll get there later!)
4. START WITH PIANO LESSONS. Although violins are made to fit children, they are too difficult for most youngsters under the age of 4 ½. The piano is very good. The child can sit comfortably. In front of them is a palette – black and white keys They can focus on listening to high and low tones – basic ear training. And there’s fun from the start: Press a key and it sounds great!
5. CREATE PEOPLE’S LIVING. The best classes of this generation are like a large group of games, where the tool is the most important. Children can’t wait to see their friends. If there are no such classes in your area, consider finding another preschooler or two to join your child’s early education.
6. BECOME A BANKRUPTCY JOB. Get at least three opinions from other parents. You and your child should meet the teacher in advance, and see the place (either the music school, or the teacher’s house.)
7. RESEARCH EVERYTHING. Many school children like to play with family and friends. Children wear; buys a special outfit; they even get new shoes! During or after the rehearsal, there should be a party (We call it a “party!”) The children will run around, eat cookies and carrots, accept compliments, and feel good!
8. KEEP THE REWARDS THROUGH HARD. Children are very ambitious, so offer lots of prizes, stickers and small toys. When your child starts shaking, you can say, “If you can play these three measures, you get a sticker.” It works like a miracle!
9. GOT FIVE MINUTES? Although the lessons require a child’s attention for 30 to 45 minutes, set a few bars to do at home. If it only takes five minutes, that’s great. They will continue as they get older. Consistency is more important than long term.
10. MAKE A BRAND. Choose a regular place and time of day to do it.
11. LEAVE THE EVENT. One night, I made a batch of stuffed animals for my 6-year-old son. On the “back” night, he took turns trying. Sometimes she entertains me in the kitchen while cooking. The wackier, the better.
12. DO NOT BUY FIBER. If you have a choice, rent or borrow. Reducing your expenses will help you have a balanced, carefree attitude. When parents buy a new instrument for the first class, it is a guarantee that the child will fail. They feel that they have made this huge amount of money, so their son should follow suit. That’s a lot of pressure.
13. BE GOOD. Always look on the bright side. Praise them for their efforts, and for their change. Your approval encourages them to stick around.
14. GIVE FIVE BOOKS. After five sessions, parents and children have a better understanding of what is needed. It’s time to ask yourself:
– Did my child learn anything?
– Should they practice for a few minutes a day?
– He said Me okay? You can Me use of time and energy?
If you answered ‘yes’ to at least two of these questions, continue with music lessons. Many of our students attend special education. Or, when they are old enough (4 ½ at least) some switch to a stringed instrument. Piano lessons are very helpful when facing many difficulties in holding and playing the violin, cello or guitar.
But even if your child is not ready to continue, you have not wasted your money. Everything he learned in those first five weeks will be there when he’s old enough to continue making music, whether it’s in three months or three years.
