The role that the education system should play in people’s lives is to train them to be conscious, critical thinkers who do not passively accept knowledge but question the knowledge they are being taught. However, American education is known to produce students who do not know about the world and different cultures. One of the reasons is that the current education does not leave much room for critical thinking but instead teaches people to be calm, worker bees in a global economy that keeps people rich and “others” not to create. I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of history and social studies they took; from his discussion, none. But the sad fact is that many people choose to go to college for financial gain, not for knowledge.
In order for the education system in this country to produce students who do not know its history and the world around it, it needs to be reformed in several ways. Parental involvement should be mandatory, as is the school’s requirement for student graduation. Lack of parental involvement is a major cause of educational failure. Parents should teach their children how illiteracy will destroy their future. Teachers are amazing people who can take students from the top of Mount Olympus to the cold and desert of Antarctica but they are there to teach, not parents. Many teachers spend most of their classroom time disciplining children and playing babysitter, two things that are not part of their job. Teachers need input from parents to make the curriculum work and learning to start at home.
Funding for education needs to be reformed. Public schools are funded by property taxes which creates unequal access to education. Areas that are affluent have more money for their local schools than those that are not. This greatly affects the education that urban and poor children receive. The No Child Left Behind Act will only make this situation worse with mandatory testing and public reporting of results. When parents buy a new home, they want to live in a school district with strong schools. This raises property values in these areas, meaning that only the wealthiest families can afford to live in the best performing schools. This means higher property taxes for those areas, while lower-income schools lose their funding if they don’t meet federal standards. There needs to be a fair education tax system that is not based on property taxes for homeowners. Government funding, in particular, is given to various schools by state and local governments and there are significant differences in funding due to race. School choice and the establishment of public schools will not be the reason because under my plan, the education system in America will be fully and proportionally supported by the federal government and carefully monitored. Due to the large amount of money that goes into education from the government, schools would change a lot because it is a big issue in many public schools: lack of money.
The curriculum of the education system should be adapted to the way the country dissolves different cultures and races. From elementary school through high school, students are inundated with facts and figures about rich, white men as if women and minorities don’t exist or contribute anything relevant to American history. It is not surprising that many students do not mention history: they do not care about these facts because they cannot relate to the actors. Students should be asked to take courses that will help them gain a deeper understanding of the world around them, courses that will discuss the history of oppressed and oppressed people in this country and around the world.
