How to Extend a Visa on Arrival (VOA) In Indonesia
I recently extended my Indonesian visa on arrival (VOA) in Bali. It took about a week, three trips to the immigration office, and Rp251,600, but it was easier than leaving the country to get a new one.
Luckily for me, I live near the immigration office (in Singaraja), so the whole process only took about an hour, including travel time. If your nearest office is far away, then you need to decide whether it is easier to make three trips or just one trip abroad.
For me, I need a helper, but I’ve heard that some people don’t need one. If you are doing this for the first time, I recommend taking someone close to you just in case. They can always help translate and fill out visa applications.
Also, I didn’t need a photo, but I’ve heard of other people being asked to provide one, so it’s best to bring the photo just in case. It’s always a good idea to carry a few passport photos with you when you go to the immigration office because you never know when they might ask. This should have a red background.
Since I used my wife as money to get my visa, I had to submit our marriage certificate. Perhaps, if you use someone else, this will not be necessary.
I had to fill out three forms. One of the letters is a letter of support, which my wife completed. The others I finished alone (with the help of my wife as one is completely in Indonesian). One of these forms requires a “materai” (stamp) which costs Rp6,000. You stick to the square shown at the bottom of the form and both of you are a sign to help your signatures match.
The second time I did this, they asked me to bring my return ticket, probably to confirm that I would be leaving the country.
One small but important thing: make sure you fill out the forms in black ink and capital letters, otherwise they may be rejected. Of course! Oh, and it’s a good idea to dress up when you enter the admissions office, so vests, shorts and flip-flops are out, as are mini skirts and short tops. You don’t have to wear a suit and tie, but long trousers/skirt (jeans are fine) and a shirt or t-shirt.
You must also provide photocopies of your passport (showing your current visa information), your sponsor’s identification card (KTP), and your marriage certificate (if your partner is sponsoring you).
5 days after submitting the forms, I went back to the immigration office and paid Rp250,000 (equivalent to 25 US dollars).
Three days later, I came back to collect my visa. Oh, and I had to pay Rp1,000 for them to stamp my passport with a new visa stamp in it.
At first I was worried that, since the whole process will take a week, I will have to have my first visa (which expired in 2 days), but it was not a problem when I left the forms. before my visa expires. Ideally, you should go within a week before your visa expires, but, even if I didn’t, they made a new visa to start from the day my first one expired. Great!
Apart from the reduced complexity of doing this (compared to leaving the country on a visa trip), there is another advantage: the visa stamp they use only takes up half a page in your passport compared to the full page of a standard VOA stamp.
I hope this helps explain the process.
One last piece of advice: don’t listen to anything they tell you at Denpasar airport on this matter because they have been giving wrong information there. For example, they may tell you that there is an immigration office at the airport, which is not true. There is one nearby, but not at the airport. They are also known to tell people that they can increase their VOA while waiting, which is not true. I suggest you save your energy and avoid asking about this at the airport.
Good luck and happy travels!
