Microsoft Windows: NTFSF or File System Integrity, Security And File Sharing Features
NTFS is a Microsoft Windows file system that provides volume consistency using logging and recovery methods. NTFS can use its log file and management information to restore file integrity.
In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, NTFS also provides advanced features such as file and folder permissions, encryption, disk quotas, and compression.
Unfortunately, volumes are not always mounted with NTFS as a file system. For example a FAT file, a file that uses a data system called File Allocation Table (FAT) to organize and manage files, is often used as a default file to ensure compatibility with older operating systems such as DOS; IBM OS2; and Microsoft Windows 3.1, 95, 98 and ME that can be on the network.
Another file system that can be installed on Windows 2000 or Windows XP is the FAT32 file system. A FAT32 file is a derivative of the FAT file system. FAT32 supports the size of smaller groups and larger volumes than FAT, resulting in better space allocation on FAT32 volumes.
Because of the inconsistency and security of NTFS you may want to change from FAT or FAT32 file system to NTFS. Microsoft provides a tool to help you do this, called “Convert”. Note that “convert” is only one option. You cannot restore your volume to FAT or FAT32 without using a third party or reformatting the drive.
To convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS, type “convert DRIVE:/fs:ntfs /X” at the command line where “DRIVE” is the drive letter (eg convert C: /fs:ntfs /x).
“modify C:” tells the command to modify the current volume on the specified drive, in this case the C drive. “/fs:ntfs” tells the command to convert to an NTFS file. “/X” parameter” will force the volume to download first.
If you are trying to convert your main volume within Windows, conversion cannot gain access to your hard drive. In other words, when XP is running some of your large files are always “working”, so the conversion must be done the next time Windows starts to open.
During the next reboot, check the drive for errors before changing the NTFS file system.
If the conversion above is correct, or if you try the instructions above and find the message “Drive already NTFS” but you do not see the “advanced section” and “security” tab in the “folder properties”, try the following. :
Open Windows Explorer.
Select the Tools menu.
Select Folder Options.
Select the View tab.
Scroll the Advanced Settings list down.
At this point, you will see “Use simple file sharing (Authorized)” option.
If it is enabled, uncheck the checkbox.
You should now have an “advanced partition” tab and a “security” tab in the “property folder” window.
