Presentation Layer in Website Design
As we all know, there are always two sides to any website design. The visible part that all users see is all the graphics, buttons, images and features behind it, which is the code that controls the functions of the website. Is it successful?
The support part does not have only one type of code, but includes different ones. The first is HTML code, which creates a framework for inserting CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) or programming languages such as PHP. In other words, HTML is used to create the content of the website, while CSS allows managing the content of your website and its appearance separately and programming languages interact with computers.
HTML itself doesn’t have the same advertising capabilities as drop-down menus or carousels. There is code that is transparently provided to users while other code is used to process data and connect to the database. The ‘Presentation layer’ refers to the graphical interface and the code that powers it, including the code that manages things like drop-down menus.
The code for the display is:
- HTML and HTML 5
Often all these languages are woven together skillfully to create a beautiful and highly functional website.
1. Creating a multimedia interface
Live and immersive design is achieved using Adobe Flash or a combination of HTML, CSS and other mixed languages.
For many years Adobe Flash was ahead, but it started to change. Today with the development of HTML 5 and CSS we are able to repeat many actions and animations.
HTML 5, the latest version of HTML, has made significant progress in terms of design capabilities. It provides advanced tools for products and services and approves how manufacturers work and use certain products. For example it allows developers to define a navigation panel with a new ‘nav’ instead of the previously used ‘div’. Videos and formats supporting HTML5 have also improved significantly, and the fact that HTML5 is supported by mobile browsers such as Apple’s Safari has opened up new opportunities for web design.
A few words about Adobe Flash
Flash is an animation and interactive technology that helps create immersive visuals. As for the implementation of the Flash element in the design of the website, the process is simple. A component created in Adobe Flash is exported as a standalone .swf file and exactly like an image, the .swf file is embedded within an HTML page. A .swf file can be a small part of a page or it can be an entire page. It should be noted that users must have Flash player installed in their browser to view a page containing the .swf file.
Even the ability to create user-friendly visuals using Flash has some drawbacks. The most important thing is that Apple’s mobile platform does not support Flash files. Therefore, a website created in Flash must provide a different version of the website for (Apple) mobile viewers (if the market is important to them). The invitation to the user to download the latest version of Flash player on the iPhone is a useless button, because even after downloading Flash the page is still not available.
HTML5 – Flash alternative
As mentioned earlier, the integration of HTML 5, CSS and jQuery code will now make it possible to create websites that are only possible in Flash. Using the ‘canvas’ element is now easier than ever to create stunning visuals and user animations. Most modern desktop and mobile browsers support the HTML5 standard which makes it possible to create designs that work across multiple platforms.
Examples of jQuery results:
- Expanding and collapsing according to windows
- Carousel image rotation
- Images zoom upon rollover etc.
1.2 Advanced CSS Graphic Effects
In the past, to create a graphic element, a button for example, we relied on bitmap images such as jpeg or gif. Not only do they increase website load time but they also have to be created by designers who are familiar with software such as Photoshop, and then have to be manually edited every time you want to change the look of the website.
Today’s CSS provides additional levels of control over the appearance of content. It is now possible to add gradations, rounded corners, highlights, and soft shadows to text and objects via code.
There are several useful CSS controls that we can use to avoid using bitmap images when building user interfaces.
The benefits of using CSS in our design are:
- Fast loading times – CSS code is written only once, and can be used as style for any image or text;
- Flexible layouts – CSS code allows you to apply dynamic layouts to fonts and elements;
- Simple editing – To change the size, color, and appearance of a button, text, or design, we just change the values in the CSS code, and the change will be applied to all elements assigned to the style;
- Accessibility – in CSS we are using literal text in our buttons and forms, and this is marked up and recognized in a way that screen readers can analyze and interpret for users who rely on such tools.
1.3 Responsive design
The latest trend in web design is ‘responsive design’. It is a method that aims to create websites in a way that provides a good viewing experience, easy to read and navigate on different devices. When a user changes the size of their browser window, the website automatically adjusts to display properly in the ‘view port’ size. View port is a new term used by developers to refer not only to different sizes of desktop browsers, but also to mobile devices that all have different default sizes.
Responsive design is possible thanks to the ‘media queries’ feature of CSS3. It detects the browser size and tells the page to load the appropriate sheet, for example ‘widescreen.css’ or ‘mobilescreen.css’. It’s possible because different layout pages have different layouts, font sizes, and image optimization settings.
Last but not least is to get user interface design ideas. There is a lot of motivation on the internet. We will be instructed to review good manufacturing practices, categorize them as important, and see how others can be adapted for use in our field.
