Creating a Beautiful Diamond in 3ds Max
In this tutorial, we will create an accurate 3D model of a diamond. We will use 3ds Max to create all the necessary objects and the VRay rendering engine to render! So, let’s get started!
Go to Shapes -> Splines -> NGOn and create one at the top. Place it at the position (0,0,0). Set the radius to 21 and the side to 16. Now we have the shape we need to start making the diamond. To make a 100% perfect diamond you’ll need the measurements used by professional diamond cutters, but for now we’ll just make it the best it can be, which doesn’t matter for simple pictures like this.
Maybe it will change if you are working on making real rings that require a lot of precision but 3ds Max is not a program designed for making rings. Now we need to extrude the shape. click on the Modifier LIst dropdown menu and select ‘edit poly’, click the extrude button and type ’19’ in the currency box. After that go to the Vertex sub-level, select and load all the top vertices, they will turn red when selected. When the vertices are too close together you can use the Weld Tool to weld them together to form a single vertex. now we have to turn the whole thing upside down. I recommend using the angle snap toggle tool to get a good 90 degree angle. With the diamond point facing down, select the face object button (the slightly red part) and then drag it out again to about 1. Again we need to bring out the face, but time this is a little higher, say around 6.
Now we have to go back to the vertices. select all vertices at the top and scale them up to 50%. Now we have almost the shape we want. You could say it’s a diamond in the rough! Now it’s time to become a diamond cutter. I would say this is the hardest part. Don’t worry about the rough part because the shape of a normal diamond is not made up of regular lines. First make sure you are using the Cut Tool.
This will help you to create some points on top of the diamond. Then go to the Top viewport We must start with the central part and create there two circles The next step is connecting the vertices with the gridle. Make sure you start with the farthest vertex that is part of the circle! Select all the surrounding polygons that make up the actual shape shown in the fourth image and hit delete to remove them. Use the cup to fill the holes Finally select all the vertices that you have connected with the gridle and move them to the bottom of the Front viewport. The value of this discount is difficult to calculate but it is about 1.2 units Max.
There are still some parts missing under the diamond so you can use the Cut Tool to create them. MORE For this diamond I used the V-Ray renderer, (Render setup, Common, Assign Renderer, V-Ray) and the 3ds Max plugin, which also comes with other tools. If you don’t have V-Ray installed you can use the Mental Ray renderer that is included as standard. On your keyboard press ‘m’ to open the settings.
Click on the button labeled ‘standard’, this will bring up the resource/map browser. look at ‘VRayMtl’ The settings I used are: Diffuse – Black Reflect – White Refract – White Index of Refraction (IOF) – about 2.43 – 2.49 Refractions subdivs – about 50 Give these things to the diamond you want to turn the diamond into a ruby or emerald , just change the diffuse color. NOW TO EXPERIENCE THE REAL TASTING OF YOUR DIAMOND. Create a plane and place it under the diamond, then select another layer of material (one of the gray balls) again select VRayMtl, just set the diffusion to pure white. I will give you the plane. (click and drag the ball to the plane). Create an omni circle light but reduce their multiplier from 1.0 to 0.25. Place them randomly. Now render the scene with the default VRay settings and Global Illumination enabled. Use Irradiance Map + Light Cache for GI.
