The Dunn’s River Falls In Ocho Rios, Jamaica

If you ever get the chance to vacation in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, you must visit Dunn River Falls.

The only way I can describe Dunn’s River Falls is amazing! You’ll start your tour at sea level on a sandy beach, and then your guide will instruct you to form a human daisy chain by holding hands with the person in front and behind you. Then your guide will start your hike as you climb 600 feet to the top of the falls.

Now I didn’t know what to expect before I arrived but I was envisioning a relaxing hike through a river where I could finally see the falls but it was so much more than that. These waterfalls consist of a series of small waterfalls cascading down the river which sometimes moves very fast. You start walking down the river from rock to rock, just like you did when you were a kid, trying not to get wet… but that doesn’t last long as you get waist deep in a hurry. Water is trying to balance you. Holding hands turned out to be a great idea!

On our day there were hundreds of people climbing the river and from below it looked like it was going to hold us but it wasn’t going to. Walking through the river requires some careful concentration, although your guide will give clear instructions on where to place your feet. At times we would be walking on the edge of 6 to 8 feet high mini falls with the strong current running over our feet but I was never afraid of falling because we were holding on to each other and our expert guide knew exactly where. to step

One thing we noticed was that the rocks were not slippery. Back home these rocks would have been covered with greenish black mud which would have made it impossible to keep your balance but the rocks were clean, making them good to step on.

Speaking of footing water shoes, it’s best to wear them on your feet. Sandals won’t provide the stability you need and could cause your foot to slide off a steep cliff.

Our group consisted of many children between the ages of 6 and 12 and while maneuvering through the river was a challenge for some adults, you had to keep a firm grip on the children to help them over the rocks and fast moving sections. As the adults tried their best not to get too wet, the children were oblivious and some completely submerged themselves in the pool. In the end it didn’t matter as we were all soaked from head to toe as we each stopped at the big falls for a family leaning photo opportunity.

Back against a huge boulder with warm and refreshing water rushing over us.

What started as a stroll through the river turned out to be more exciting and challenging.
